We’re not all 100% arse. Some of us are only 90%.

For those of us who weren't born during the post-WWII boom, life has been confusing. Many of us came of age jut before or during the Great Recession which was a major career setback all its own but we've also had to deal with the US economy transitioning from what was once a manufacturing economy into a service oriented economy. It's confusing, frustrating, and at times downright unfair but we're all going through it in one way or another.

Don't punish yourself for your current circumstances. Look forward to what you can do tomorrow. It sounds like simple maybe even trite advice but when you find yourself in a shitty situation it really is about tomorrow. Have patience and a goal and you will eventually get there. Most of all don't beat yourself up for where you are (that never helps).

I don't know what the job market is like for a criminal justice degree, but I would suspect that the same principle applies that is true of other professions, and that is this: there are good jobs out there if you're willing to go where the job is. That may mean moving to a different part of the country, but you have to decide what's important. When we limit our options to those that are in close proximity, we make it more difficult.

A mentor of mine once told me, "never turn down a job until it's been offered to you."

This. You have a college degree. People who are failures in every sense of the word don't have one of those.

Not sure where your located buddy.. but I’m guessing it’s not around Jackson,MS as I don’t think we have Publix here. Anyways I have a lot of contacts in the area especially with companies looking for young workers who want to work. Companies such as sanderson farms. If you ever want to look into Sales I wouldn’t mind giving you a place to shoot your resume to. Try to find something you love as that will make all the difference in the world. I was working a desk job and making good money.. but man I hated it. It really drove me into the ground.. now I’m around people and outside. Made a huge difference in my attitude and how I carry myself. Keep your head up though... I was 33 when I finally got in the right path.

Depends on where I am.

I didn't get certain weekends off in 2001, 2002, almost all of 2003, 2005, all of 2006, 2007, 2008, half of 2009, almost all of 2011, some of 2013 and 2014, half of 2015, and some of 2018.

I have weekends off, I don’t know how common that is I may be lucky. Happiness is priceless. Even if you have to start over doing something that doesn’t make you feel worthless and miserable it is worth it. It sounds like you should make a change my man. You’re obviously a relatively smart guy if you graduated from Ole Miss. What do you have to lose?

I went through 33 years of problems in St. Louis. Including 4 years at the Post Office. I am very lucky to be able to get back my health and so forth. I do have some health issues that is related to the tortured and abused at the Post Office and from some other people outside of the post office. It took me a long time to overcome those problems and I have missed a lot of my life because I was not myself and was always sick or have health issues over the years. I am eating the best I have ever had and doing a lot better but the scarred will never go away. I do not trust people in general. Some are from my family members. I just keep focusing on now and into the future and forget the past and enjoy what is left of my life and health. I am very lucky it could have been worst. I was very healthy growing up so that made the difference from being fat/sick and popping all those medicines that I did not need permanently. I was being manipulated by some people and doctors. I just woke up and walked away and went on with my life and changed my diet 180 degrees and have done research and contact some people at health food store and read some books on spices and food that actually helped me. I am very picky of what I eat due to staying sharp and being fit to keep from going to the dark side and developed health issues that almost kept me from living a normal life. I still have some health issues but it was really bad back then and taking medicine that had side effect that was really bad. I hope you contact some people that you trust and get some info about food/spices and getting exercise to keep you sharp and away from trouble. Food is the key for me. Eating bad food would make me sick and see what many people going though right now. That is the main problem people are going though now a days. I avoid people who smokes and live in a unhealthy lifestyles. That is why I had to walk away from some family members and friends. I am very healthy for my age right now even though I have aged a lot due to 33 years of lack of sleep and what others did to me. Never give up hope and try to have faith and try to pray as well. Good luck to you and hope you get your life in order soon.

Sometimes I think we're all assholes and then I read the responses in threads like these. We ranters may well live in a hive of scum and villainy but by God when the chips are down most of us are pretty damn good people. In a way, I suppose that's what it means to be SEC.

I almost deleted my post before posting it here and cause God knows we give each other s*** on here we are a merciless bunch. Definitely helped me.

And ive done a lot of different things I've done electrical work, I've interned at a police department, I have worked and am working in retail, I took a life and health insurance exam and courses for that, computer programming and I'm currently taking computer networking involving Cisco routers Etc.

still trying to find my place in the world figure out what the hell I'm good at because most of the should have tried I have struggled mightily.

I think my worst job was the 2 years of being an electrical worker, smallest guy on the job site so I went into all the walls into the ceilings and under the floors. I worked on a military base during that, so the pay was good. That job was the first job that taught me that it doesn't matter if you're making good money if you f****** hate your job it is not worth it.

Dude you’re fine! It takes a lot of guts to post like you did. Most of us throw up numbers and insult the fan base accordingly. It’s actually refreshing to see a real post.

If it's made you feel even a tiny bit better then I'm glad you didn't hit delete. Most of us are normal, caring, human beings despite the a-hole we pretend to be online and many more than you might realize have been through what you're going through at some point in their lives.

Even all Baby Boomers are not created equal

Those born from say 1938 really got the benefits of the Boomers as they rode the front end of the wave and got lots of stuff without having to work for it. Those that survived the Great Depression AND WWII really spoiled their kids because of much of what they suffered through. While Boomers are supposed to start in 1946 you can often go 6 to 8 years earlier and get the same mentality.

On the flip side some put the end at 1960 to 1966 but from maybe 1968 to 1966 you are on the arse end of the Boomers and did not really benefit the way they did socially or financially. I may be skewed in my view but a big part of what is wrong in American is the early Boomers held power too long and f*cked it up for everybody who came after them. Like or hate Trump, he is clearly in the "entitled" age in America and part of why we are suffering as a country now.

Trump was clearly spoiled and entitled and it is clearly reflected in his lack of real leadership today. Born in 1946 he is smack dab in the middle of the Boomer generation that would be better labeled as the "spoiled and entitled" generation. This is not just aimed at Trump because lord knows many of his ilk exist but they are just not household names to the average Americans. Hillary was born a year after Trump and is just as guilty as he is for not being in touch with the needs of the actual people in this country who must actually live in this world and earn an average wage.

If we are to go forward we need to be looking for leaders more in touch with the realities of a future USA so that means staring with the tail end boomers (say 1958 and younger) as they are really the first generation in American history that will not be better off than their parents generation, even tho these stragglers are associated with the Boomer Bubble. The problem is even tho those from say 1938 to 1956 have held on to power too long, the bigger issue is they have not trained the generation to replace them even tho that generation may have been better equipped than those under say 35 who have no clue how not to repeat the bad history of the past.

The USA is clearly in a bad spot in the next 10 to 20 years and much of the really good wisdom is being lost at an alarming rate as the last generation of hard working middle class folks are dying off. Quickly, those strong individuals forged in the fires of the Great Depression and last Great War will be gone and their legacy of working together will be replaced by the narcissistic locusts of the Early Boomers and the generation they spawned of even more narcissistic offspring.

As the resident old guy here, the time is now for the young to focus less on what can be done for themselves and more on what they can accomplish by rebuilding the true community relationships last seen in an age in American where we really needed to rely on each other to survive.

I work every weekend for a railroad. It sucks but I’m not giving up a pension to watch football. If you are in a dead end job look at the Big 4 railroads. Every single one of the is begging for train crewmen. UP and BNSF is paying a pretty good signing bonus as well.

Most won't read your entire post because it's fairly long but I can't say that you're wrong in this. The Boomers certainly didn't all get the same deal and tbh, I know from my own family's circumstances that those benefits accrued mainly to those already in the white mid-to-upper class. If you were PWT or heaven forbid PBT that moment in time likely passed you by without giving you shite to show for it.

Sadly, I don't think we'll ever experience an an era of such wealth and growth without the insane world wars that precipitated the US and Canada being the last two standing by virtue of pure geography.

I also agree that we have to make our own future. That's hard when you have to get Xers, Yers, and Millenials all to agree on a goal but I still believe that we have the will to do it. What we need is a real reason to do it. I wish we had a JFK who could tell us to shoot for the moon. But the leadership right now is at pretty low levels regardless of which party you're looking at.
