I work every weekend for a railroad. It sucks but I’m not giving up a pension to watch football. If you are in a dead end job look at the Big 4 railroads. Every single one of the is begging for train crewmen. UP and BNSF is paying a pretty good signing bonus as well.

Those are damn good jobs. They are brutally hard jobs if you are working the labor end but damned good jobs regardless. My FIL worked for Southern and later Norfolk Southern most of his life and was able to provide a good life for his wife and children despite starting out as an unskilled laborer. He told me that when the Southern Railroad/Norfolk Southern job came along he was working as a butcher's apprentice and he'd just gotten married. When he saw the difference in pay he didn't need to think twice.

When he died his railroad family went out of their way to make sure everything was taken care of and tbh, we know that even though it's a few years on since his passing his brothers will go out of their way to help in any way they can with whatever comes up.

If someone can get on as a crewman they'd be crazy to pass it up. The pay is good but the family aspect just blew my mind.

If we were on the JFK trajectory we would already be on Mars by now. The young rich don't want to enrich those around them. They learned this from their Boomer parents or grandparents.

If you were working during the WWI - Great Depression - WWII era, you were rewarded by owning individual stock in they paid you dividends that became your retirement income as you got older. This model was erased in the 80's and the Dotcom folks who believed they should keep all the money for themselves and screw giving it back to the working class in the form of dividends.

Some big changes in my lifetime that don't get discussed as much as they should....

Individuals owned stock, now they own mutual funds
Individuals set money aside for future, now we borrow more than we should
Individuals built companies, now their kids shipped the jobs overseas for personal gain
Individuals were aware of their fellow man, now it is all about the self

Sure you can.

You just are choosing not to.

You can at least tell him enough that he can figure out a direction and trajectory.

If you were PWT or heaven forbid PBT that moment in time likely passed you by without giving you shite to show for it.

I knew Dave Thomas and his daughter well enough back in the day. That dude was totally self made and did so by outworking his peers. I can truly say that in this age, he could not do as well as that age of the real "rags to riches" stories where we were the land of opportunity. I have noticed since RR won the POTUS and this whole "greed is good" shift that those that rise from the bottom are less likely from solid work and citizenship and more about gaining wealth by gouging their fellow citizens.

As for PWT and PBT, I think it is worse today than pre 1980's as at least back then you could be poor and be seen as having class where as now if you are poor you are trash.

One of the major problems we have as a society is that our wealthiest members have lost that sense of noblesse oblige that kept the moneyed in the good graces of the majority who have less than them. And in a lot of cases we've compounded the problem and replaced it with a Marie Antoinette "let them eat cake" attitude. Folks can skate on that for a while but eventually it will come back and bite every one of us -- too many examples in history show that destruction of the middle class leads to internal strife (my euphemism for 'we gonna cut yo mothafrickin head off if you don't make sure we can have bread') for this to continue.

But to be honest, I know enough about the French Revolution to view it as a pretty horrible outcome that could've been avoided and one that I certainly don't want to see happen here. BUT we have to re-evaluate what's important.

I think you are spot on with this.

Most civilizations fall from within long before they get sacked from the outside. I think game theory is correct in practice but it has been replaced by public choice theory where fewer and few at the top have the necessary means (wealth and power) to game the whole for self interest. Monopolies and pork barrel politics are not in the best interests of an overall democracy yet they thrive because they have the critical mass to defeat grass root movements originating in the masses.

Viewed another way, the only group not to take a haircut in the 2008 melt were the Washington beltways folks (lobbyists and contractors) who are not household names to the vast majority of Americans yet with small relative investments they have siphoned off the majority of capital that could have been better utilized if dispersed among the vast majority of the US population.

I have occasional on call for weekends but that is hit or miss quite rare. I do have the occasional weekend to work depending on if a project is super massive.

OP : keep working hard and your head up. I hope something good works for you. Also, dont hesitate to go out and network. You never know where that will lead too

I work in banking, and the term "banker's hours" applies. Our CEO is a huge CFB fan, so he has said multiple times that we would not start opening on Saturday under his watch.

bro, you're in your early 30s. Go back to school, get a different job, or do something. No one should consider themselves a failure at any age, considering it's never too late to redefine yourself. But especially not at 32 or 33.

I was wondering if jobs where you get weekends off even exist anymore I just don't know.

Most white collar and office type jobs are M-F.

Not true, but there are a lot of immature adolescents on these boards.

I'm envious of all you guys to get to spend some time with family and friends and watch something that you enjoy. I wish I could partake myself. Cheers.

Do you have days off during the week? I used to work a job that was a varied schedule, some weeks I worked M-F, some weeks I worked weekends and days during the week.
It was nice to have time off during the week, as you could do things that you can't do on weekends or after 5pm on a week day.

Have you considered changing jobs or careers? I'm guessing you are still pretty young, lots of time to take a chance on something else.

Keep your head up, it wont always be that way.

After I graduated from college no one was hiring and I ended up managing an office supply stores copy and print department for two years because I had a graphic design degree. Thankfully I eventually got out and into my field.

I do have weekends off now, but I don't watch games with other people. Mostly because I get to into the game and don't like other people talking / distracting me from cursing at the piece of shite ref who just kicked your star running back out of a god damned bowl game because he didn't want to be helped up from the ground. You could have just let him get up himself, but no you wanted to be the man and throw your pathetic yellow hanky... GO BUCK YOURSELF REF!!!!!

You get the idea. Keep working at getting yourself out of the situation you're in and you'll get there.

I'm glad you got that off your chest.

And that was the worst call in the history of college football.

You are not alone out there baw. I know the helpless feeling depression brings, I was going through a real dark spell earlier this year and I'm just now shaking it off. Prayers that you work and talk it out.

I am essentially on call every day out of the year except when on vacation. It results in me actually working probably 1 out of every 4-6 weekends. It sucks but I retire this year so yay. I specifically remember missing the Bama UGA SECCG. I got called out this year also at the very very end of the SECCG so that wasn't too bad.

To answer your question, yes I work Monday through Friday. However, with regard to this part, keep your head up. Most people, including myself, do not fall into a perfect situation right out of college. I had a job that was good for experience but sucked pay-wise relative to what I wanted, but that ultimately led to me getting the job I’ve always wanted that I hold today. It was a tough few years but got through it. If all else fails and you don’t see an end in sight, consider a trade. That’s a very noncrowded space that is always looking for people willing to put in the work.

You're young enough to change your circumstances. Good luck getting outside your comfort zone enough to do it.
