Chinese Navy ship seen carrying an apparent railgun capable of firing hypersonic projectiles

quote:

A photo taken...purports to show the Type 072II Yuting-class tank landing ship Haiyangshan with a railgun mounted on its bow.

quote:

the US has been pursuing its railgun capability since 2005, China has seemingly taken the front foot

quote:

a railgun uses a high-powered electric circuit to shoot a projectile along magnetic rails, firing at hypersonic speeds of Mach 5 or higher

quote:

A US intelligence report found that China's weapon would be able to strike 200 kilometres away with a projectile velocity of 2.5 kilometres per second (9,000kph — greater than Mach 7).

quote:

the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) gave BAE systems $48.3 million to test phase 2 of their railgun program in 2013.

The Electro-Magnetic Laboratory Rail Gun currently being developed by BAE and General Atomics and under review by the US Navy has a range of about 220 miles and could fire six rounds a minute with a 3000 round lifespan. Compare that to the 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 guns of the Iowa class battleships which had a range of 24 miles at a rate of 2 rounds per minute.

Rail guns are cheaper than missiles and less detectable although they have a shorter range. They have a much larger range, at least ten times farther, than traditional naval guns and are much safer (no need to carry large stores of explosives).

‘Sink two aircraft carriers’: Chinese Admiral’s chilling recipe to dominate the South China Sea

quote:

Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reports Admiral Lou gave a wide-ranging speech on the state of Sino-US relations. The high-profile, hawkish military commentator reportedly declared the current trade spat was “definitely not simply friction over economics and trade,” but was instead a “prime strategic issue”.

quote:

His speech, delivered on December 20 to the 2018 Military Industry List summit, declared that China’s new and highly capable anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles were more than capable of hitting US carriers, despite them being at the centre of a ‘bubble’ of defensive escorts.

quote:

Rear Admiral Lou Yuan is deputy head of the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences. In his speech, he said there were ‘five cornerstones of the United States’ open to exploitation: their military, their money, their talent, their voting system — and their fear of adversaries.

That looks more like a conventional naval gun than a rail gun.

I’d expect to see a longer device to accelerate projectiles.

They Chinese; they play joke.

I guarantee you it's not a rail gun, and even if it is, you can bet it's not a functioning one.

If it's a real rail gun, let's see it fire. Ours have been hitting Mach 7 (about 5,370 mph) and in this case roughly 5,600 mph. so I don't really think they've taken the lead on this front. Even if theirs can shoot 5,589 mph (yes English units) it's not that much different from ours, and I've yet to see theirs actually do that.

He's not wrong. We basically built modern China and hollowed ourselves out doing it. As such our trade wars are attempts at maintaining/improving our super power status on the economic and manufacturing front. And it does seem certain things are open for exploitation by other nations. A sad thing, to be sure.
Still, I don't think the Chinese would be able to handle our Navy. There's benefits to having the highest military budget on the planet.

The submarine attached to the battle group would bottom those ships before they got in position to shoot on the carrier.

The US could have done the same thing like 50 years ago. For the life of me I will never understand why we just stopped going to the moon. Full stop.

Landing a craft on the moon would be considered child's play by today's standards.

Hell, it wasn't long ago and someone landed a craft on a frickin comet.

Why would the Chinese use English numbers on their naval ships. Seems fishy
