Its been a while since I've posted anything, but recently I have gotten into cigars and decided to up my liquor game to pair.

On Friday, I went to a local ABC store (in Birmingham, Alabama) looking for Buffalo Trace and was told it was on allocation and come back on Sat, and get here early. I showed back up Saturday morning at 9:30 and was about mid 30th in the line. It took about an hour, doors opened up at 10 and they let 5 people in at a time and apparently this happens at every store in the state.

I was able to score a 750 ml bottle of Buffalo Trace (that was a store barrel pick) 90 Proof and a 1L bottle of Early Times 100 proof bottled in bond. I was wanting a Eagle Rare but it was gone.

TL ; DR I know

So the question is this...What are your guys experiences with buying bourbon and just bourbon overall? Favorites? Etc

One could find Buffalo Trace very easily a few years ago. Now it's nearly impossible.

Don't get me started on Eagle Rare. That shite is like finding a unicorn in the wild.

I will say I started buying Four Roses Small Batch Select and it is fricking incredible.

I can attest to this. Hell, if I happen to find Eagle Rare at a store I don't know if I'd buy it to drink or buy it to sell at a huge mark up to someone else.

I buy two types of Bourbon, the cheap kind I use as mixers (ginger ale, coke, or what have you)and the good stuff I drink neat. Four Roses Small Batch is amazing. If you can get your hands on some treat yourself.

I can get it from the Class Six stores on military bases for like $45. My local liquor store has it North of $60.

Same problem in Vicksburg/Delta LA, except there is no waiting in line. Either they have it or they don't.

The trouble is more widespread than the Buffalo Trace products in my experience. It seems to me that the somewhat lesser brands are being bought up (and out) in the absence of Pappy, etc. I stumbled into Jefferson's because of this and they saw me coming with their "Ocean - Aged at Sea" brand. Overpriced, but pretty darn good. And no longer available.

I wonder if the problem is mostly about employment troubles/distribution or if there was a nationwide run on the stuff after Netflix's "The Bourbon King".

Most liquor stores know their booze. And then there is the one I'm stuck shopping at. I'm fairly certain the people there know bourbon has alcohol in it but not much more than that.

Sucks to not live in Kentucky eh?

Bourbon shortages and waits? Unheard of. Buffalo Trace isn't even a rare or hard to find Bourbon. Kind of shocked to hear that's the one that you're having trouble finding down there TBH.

Sounds like you've found yourself a good reason to take a road trip up here to Lexington and visit us.

The problem is the State needs to get out of the liquor business. Let it go private and you will have less problems . Love Eagle Rare but can’t find it. Started drinking 1792:and regular Jefferson’s small batch instead.

I spend far too much money on bourbon hunting. If you really want a specific bottle, follow the abc store releases for allocated bottles and/or get in the right local bourbon Facebook groups.

I’ll throw you a bone since you’re in B’ham and say get on Facebook and search c.a.b.f.

You can usually get a bottle at the distillery and sometimes score a bottle of Eagle Rare or Blantons. Get there before 10 am and get in line. They won't advertise what is available on what day.

I like Buffalo Trace but have been drinking Knob Creek small batch 9 years old 100 proof. Also Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is readily available.

The best Bourbon is.....the one you like. There are lots of good Bourbons and no reason to pay ridiculous prices because one has become kitchy or scarce.

If you like a wheated Bourbon then try Makers Mark. I like the cask run at 114 proof. Smooth for that amount of alcohol. There is also Makers 46. So don't focus on Pappy or Weller that have gone crazy high.

Plenty of Bourbon in the Bluegrass.

I discovered the Small Batch last year, and it is fantastic. Favorite bourbon for the price.

Are you talking about 750ml for that price? My local store has it for $34, and found it at Costco last week for $28.

Small Batch Select.

It's more expensive than the Small Batch.

Blantons if you can find it for a reasonable price. It used to be $50 but you can't find it under $85 now.

I'll take the Pepsi Challenge any day with Evan Williams Single Barrell. It's a $100 bourbon priced under $30.
