the university is investigating and will likely give her a fairly harsh punishment.
Why would the University punish her?

If I ever become world famous, it will be interesting to see if any of my friends roll over on me for money. If they went public with some of the things I have texted them, good GOD the media would have an orgasm

Because this continues to be a black eye. I hope she's kicked out. Enough is enough.

Well then you better kick out 90% of your black students then, because I am pretty sure they used the soft r N word on social media at some point

She sent a stupid message that she intended to be private. There is no law against making a stupid mistake like this or being bigoted in this way.

This slope could get real slippery when people start examining every student's social media posts for offensive comments.

Or do we just punish the one's published in the news?

I am sure there is a university student handbook or code of conduct that covers this and if she violated it, they can remove her from school.

There is. I don't think the punishment is expulsion.

PR move. Also violates code of conduct if they are really looking for a scapegoat, which they are. This girl really picked a bad time to be stupid. The university and her sorority have no choice but to throw the book at her.

I'm sure there is some catch all in a handbook that they could cite to punish her. That isn't a law. The question is why would they (not how could they) and do they intend to enforce the code against all forms of bigoted and offensive speech or just the ones reported in the media?

I would BET selective enforcement is used, based on the race of the person/s involved.

It's not the players Bama has to worry about getting arrested/in trouble in the offseason....it's the fans.

Oh, I totally agree with you. But welcome to the 21st century, where a private conversation can force you to lose a 2 billion dollar sports franchise. This girl's career is essentially over because of this stupid snapchat.

Of course not.

I highly doubt the school kicks her out of school for this. The sorority already did and I bet she will meet with the Provost and the schools attorney and force her to take(and pay) for some type of discrimination class or course work.

Since when was anything "fair" when it comes to punishing speech? The university tries to keep hateful speech that is not in the media out of the public eye. Once it is in the media they have to do something to please the masses who cry for blood.

Nah, her name is not on the picture and it will be forgotten in a month.
