https://www.wltx.com/story/news/education/2015/02/10/subcommittee-votes-close-sc-state-university/23179483/

quote:

A House subcommittee has approved a measure that would close South Carolina State University to allow the school to correct its finances.

The Higher Education and Technical Colleges subcommittee approved the measure on a 3-1 vote Tuesday afternoon. The bill still must go to the full House Ways and Means committee, and potentially the entire House, for consideration.

If approved, the school would shut down July 1st, and remain closed for the 2015-2016 school year, and then reopen. All programs, both academic and athletic, would be affected.

Qualifying students would have the option to transfer to another state school.

Kentucky State University was in similar financial straits last year. A strong KSU president dropped the hammer on nonpaying/slow paying students by dismissing 1/4 of the student population. He also laid off 20% of staff. He gave $90,000 from his own salary so that the lowest earning workers would get a cost-of-living raise.

Sometimes the managers of schools have to take draconian measures to keep the state from stepping in but they can show compassion to those most affected, too.

Southern Miss isn't going anywhere, even though they could use a couple hundred million. MS Valley definitely needs to close and maybe Southern Univ.

SC State has had some serious, criminal, shenanigans going-on with a lot of money misappropriated and embezzled.

I hate it for Buddy Pough though. Always liked Buddy.

Doubtful. There's not another MS 4 year school in the south part of the state.

There will be some serious screaming from blacks about racism ... and Obama may get involved seeing as how he got his way and held his first ever debate there back in '07 or '08 I think it was.

But the school is just crooked. They teach racism there. They need to go. O-Burg is a fricking armpit anyways. That whole county is lost.

$6 million bailout from the General Assembly in May 2014, another $12 million appropriated from the Budget and Control Board in December 2014 and SCSU still owes $10 million for food and vendor services? The good folks of Orangeburg should be mad at SCSU for its gross negligence in operating the state's most prominent historically black school. But instead they'll blame the legislature, who seem to be the only one's interested in the long-term viability of the institution.

Alabama State isn't far behind this. Their credit rating is now on par with junk bonds.

They just hire a new football coach though.

On SCSU, Jesse and Al are about to have a field day with this shite.
