Have a Mormon classmate and he insists that he's a Christian. I'm not sure I agree. Their beliefs are so radical and different from regular Christians that I consider them their own thing. Are they Christians?

They're Christians, but they're deffinitely their own breed apart from the traditional Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox traditions.

Mormons are to Christianity as the Nation of Islam (aka Black American Muslims) are to Sunni and Shiite Islam.

Considering all the radical differences between different sects of Christians, it makes no sense to single out this one and say they're not Christians. They believe in Christ as the resurrected son of God and the path to salvation. That makes them Christians. The belief that he appeared to people in the western hemisphere and gave another testament is just a variation on the details of his life. They still believe the Bible and have simply added the additional testament of Christ to it. The philosophy is not significantly changed. They are Christians.

Thank god you don't get to decide these things. "Regular" Christians are starting to frighten me.

Letter of the law they are Christians as they believe in the divinity of Christ. But they are the furthers away from the rest of the mainstream Christian sects and different that where many Catholics and Protestants may see each other as closely aligned theologically, Mormons are on their own.

They do identify as christian but they are way off in left field.

Ask them about black people and see what they tell you. If you find an honest Mormon this conversation will blow ur mind!

Are the Elders in the Mormon Church still "allowed" to have revelations from God and pronounce them as doctrine of the church?

Joseph Smith may be one of the biggest con men this country has seen.

My family lived across the street from a Mormon family on base in Oklahoma.

Vividly remember how awkward that, uh, "color issue" conversation was when it happened to come up in the course of conversation between my parents and theirs

Their teachings directly contradict the teachings of the bible. They are not Christians, but they know that they can only thrive by praying on the misinformed. Mormonism is a cult, and there is no way around that.

That quote by Mohandas seems to refer to behavior. Behavior has to do with sanctification but not with salvation.

I may be a little fuzzy on the specifics. They teach that before we are born on earth everyone is a spirit baby in heaven. We are conceived by God and other great men of god who have been given deity status. If you are a good spirit baby you are born into a white family as a reward. If you are a rebellious spirit baby you are born to a black family as a form of punishment or curse. I think they now deny this but i have talked to several Mormons who still strongly believe this crap.

i would put them in the "no" category. solely based on the fact that salvation is not found in Christ alone in their teachings.

i can disagree with a catholic, baptist, methodist, 7th day Adventist all day long on a multitude of points, but 90% of us will agree salvation is found in Christ's redemption and forgiveness of sins alone. Mormon's have a few more credentials to achieve salvation.

ETA: Jehovah's witness are the same way.

In the end, all other issues are irrelevant. For the individual, this is the only question that matters.

I mean, what do you even say to something like that?
