may be old news for some, but thought this was interesting
SOURCE
I did not know they could get that far north and survive cold winters (though its been awfully mild out)
I live in north alabama, just a stones throw from mississippi in Marion county. There have always been some reports of gators in the area but I thought that was about the farthest north they could get. Apparently not! who knows what the future will bring with a increasingly warm climate. hell armadillos used to only be south of Birmingham when I was a kid but now theyre all over the place

Armadillos are becoming a common sight in southern Kentucky. That blows my mind.

I would say that the world is warming up, which would extend their range, but that would open a can of worms that would devour our little corner of the tRant.
Alligators are nature's great survivor story. Crocodiles, particularly the larger species like the Nile and Saltwater Croc, are more aggressive and active but the American Alligator is the hands down champion of getting by no matter what.
Way back when there used to be a healthy population of alligators as far north as Chesapeake Bay. Yes, before any humans got here but they were there. We know they can survive being frozen over winter. They have may have been active even further up the coastline.
They are the Terminator of Reptiles. You just can't stop them from moseying along in their own unhurried way.

Sure you can. Restrictions on hunting them, or the lack thereof, would change things real quick.

What would be the purpose of that?

I haven't seen them around Collierville yet (not far from where they are in the Wolf River), but my buddy caught one in his neighborhood in Byhalia, MS in the spring of '18. It was about 8 miles from the TN line

Since around the mid-80’s they have become an increasingly dangerous nuisance in Mississippi. In central and south MS they are everywhere. Every stagnant body of water, whether its a pond or a creek, will have several.

remember the gator in the chicago park a few months ago

There is at least one documented and photographed gator in the Chattahoochee river in the Atlanta area. Doesnt mess with anybody, but its there.

Nearly went extinct back in the day but thanks to protection laws they are booming. One of the toughest and most successful species of animals to ever exist.

This one was caught in my hometown of Conway, SC

i have noticed that very same thing here in southern Mississippi.
as we get close to the end of winter for some reason we have a increasingly warm climate.
it's bizarre cause it repeats this cycle every 12 months.

I would say that the world is warming up
there is no factual data to backup such a statement as this.

how to stop them?
hunting alligators is a form of conservation.

I know back in 1979 56 gators were released in the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge which is part of the Tennessee River near Decatur AL. Those survived, and are most likely the ones that are now expanding into Tennessee.
