A rant about communicating via text message

I have been thinking a lot lately about dating / talking and text messaging and never actually speaking on the phone.
I'm curious to know if I'm the only one that feels that communicating strictly by text message is childish and immature? This has been on my mind for a few days. I was unaware that grown arse adults that are supposed to have feelings for each other strictly communicate electronically. I thought 8th graders discussed their feelings via text message.
Is this the norm, or am I being crazy for wanting to actually have a conversation with the guy I'm talking to? I really was unaware that grown arse adults who are supposed to be mature actually discussed important issues by text message.
I have decided, if someone can't take the time to actually call and act interested every once and a while, they aren't worth it. I think it's a way to avoid paying attention to the person. I've been thinking a lot about this. You can't hear tone of voice in texts and its easy to take things the wrong way.
Does anyone else have a problem with this? Is it ok with you if the person you are talking to does nothing but text? I'm bringing this up because my friend and I were talking about this the other day. We were both talking to guys who did nothing but text. I just want to know if I'm the only one who thinks that communication strictly by text is unhealthy?

I'm not sure it is immature, however I understand your point about needing a balance between more convenient electronic communication and more intimate vocal communication, which could come via a phone call or preferably in person.

I only communicated with my last girlfriend via text, but she was deaf so i dunno.

What adult communicates strictly through text? It's odd

Mrs. Tbird and I began dating via text message, believe it or not.
Long phone conversations did come later though.

I could give you some examples.

Depends on the situation. Just texting probably wouldn't be too bad if you were seeing them on the regular in person and talking with them face to face pretty much everyday. I couldn't do it if it was someone I wasn't seeing on the regular in a long-distance type situation and would find it Te'o-esque odd.

I prefer to communicate via talking on the phone. The usual times I communicate with my gf by text are when we're at work.

That's my feeling on the matter as well.

A good mixture of both is the way to go. Although being on the phone with a chick that can talk for hours about nothing kinda sucks too, but its a necessary evil.

During day I prefer texting, at night or when fricked up phone conversation is good

I'm not talking about blabbing for hours.
I'm talking about having serious discussions by text. I don't like talking on the phone a lot either, but when you're seeing someone, you should communicate in ways other than by text when it's a serious discussion.

I also hate talking on the phone but I don't text that often either unless I can't talk otherwise.

The only person I talk to on the phone is my grandma. That will change as soon as I can teach her to text.

If it's that serious you should be talking in person IMO.

I think you are on point, but it is also a personal preference thing.
For me personally, I don't like long text conversations. It is a fricking hassle and takes forever if it something that requires some back and forth. I personally do not have all day to carry on a text conversation and get annoyed if a few back and forths are not sufficient.
This actually happened to me a few days ago when I got pissed at a buddy and told him to STFU with the texting and to pick up the phone and call me later in the day if he wanted to talk.
So it is a preference thing. I'm good with texting unless it requires more conversation than can be conveyed in a few messages. 30 minutes of back and forth via text is something I get annoyed with and stop responding to. And some people go one for hours.

I generally only talk to someone by text even if we're physically in the same room or near each other.
