"Some of our players are very concerned for the events that are taking place on campus and I can understand their passion for important events on campus. We are excusing them from practice for a few days as they feel strongly about participating in the protests. I am a football coach and my team has a game to get ready for on Saturday. We will be conducting voluntary practices. When those players are ready to rejoin practice, we will happily welcome them back."

5th - you either support the player protest or you don't. A VERY successful coach did not then. WY football has been dead ever since.

If Pinkel would not have supported players, some would call it racism too. Come on man, it's simple.

People have called Pinkel a racist before, regardless of the actions he takes. He will be called one again. Probably today.

It's an epithet that has zero meaning anymore. Stop being scared of it.

No it isn't.

Those would be the ignorant people. Who we shouldn't allow to dictate our society.

you either support the player protest or you don't

As I said before, you can oppose racism without using a hunger strike, without refusing to play football.

WY football has been dead ever since.

Not because they are in a desolate state? Not in a Power conference? Little entertainment or city life? Virtually no recruiting advantages? Not that they have only had 5 players EVER drafted into the NFL(3 of the 5 in the last 2 years)?

Blaming Wyoming football's failures on a single racist event is simply dumb.

Take race out of the equation. It could been about protesting bad chow in the dining room. And Pinkel thinks is darn good?

You either support players or you don't. Pinkel had NO choice.

Can you imagine being in a recruits living room and the recruit ask why didn't you support your players? Can you imagine what a competition coach is gonna say to a recruit? Pinkel did not support his players so why even consider them?

That's simplistic and short-sighted and exactly the sort of thinking I'd expect a football coach to use (even one making $4m).

This situation will have to be addressed by Pinkel in a lot of his recruiting regardless of the stance he took. He'll still have to address it. Allowing the ones who wanted to protest to protest and allowing the ones to practice who wanted to practice would have completely defused the situation on the football team. I can almost guarantee you some black players would've been at practice.

"Normally, you have to be sick or injured to miss practice. We are allowing these player athletes to partake in something that is important to them."

I disagree. Some small pockets may have called him racist in the past for whatever reason, but he would have been butchered by the liberal media and black community. You know how this works. You think anyone outside of the people that wanted to see him do it would have had any kind of rational reaction? Come on

As for it having zero meaning, I think you are being incredibly naive here.

It has a meaning approaching zero as x approaches infinity.

He had an opportunity to exhibit leadership and do the right thing. He chose the pussy way. It's ok. I understand why he did it. But he had a choice. And a real choice. And the choice wasn't "kill the football program or support the protest."

Exactly. Coaches used to say Louie Carnesecca had a brain tumor every year to scare kids away from St. John's. Recruiting is the muck and the mire of nonsense. If you're running your program in a fashion to avoid negative recruiting, you've already lost.

Hmmm... It would have been interesting to see how this scenario would have played out.

He really had no way to come out of this clean

A: He supports his players. Avoids the racist tag, but in the process majorly pisses off his white conservative fans/boosters to the point of stopping donations/boycott

Don't feed into that hype. Those people will STILL support Mizzou and donate. Hell look at Ole Miss, changed mascots, banned rebel flag in stadium, one school talked about removing state flag. Don't you think that would piss off a lot of whites. That shite didn't stop donations, support. Stadiums still full.

Look at what happened during the 60's. Those whites didn't want blacks in the SEC. Fight over Integration would put this to shame. Donations didn't stop coming in, people still supported those SEC schools. Look at the major stadium expansions since integration. SEC is making waaaay more money with these black bulls than they did with just white players.

White people aren't going to boycott a damn football game just like they didn't do that shite at Ole Miss and other SEC schools. Don't let the ranters fool you. If the SAME shite happened at LSU, Alabama, Auburn, UGA, Tenn, Ole Miss, Miss State, etc the same changes would have happened, people would resign. They need those black bulls to play football, entertainment, brings money into the schools, community, etc. If 3-5* black bulls stopped going to SEC schools, SEC football would fall to the status of FCS schools.

So do you really think those white conservative fans/boosters want to piss off southern blacks?? College Football means the world to them. Especially in states with no NFL or MLB team.

You guys are sitting back listening to people that don't know finances of college football, people that never liked Mizzou because they are "yankees". They fooled some of you into hating your own school when those same damn fans know if they pissed off southern blacks, the same shite would happen if black football players threatened to not play. That's why there's changes in Mississippi. Think about it!!!

I don't agree with the team getting involved. But you listen to liberal black talk shows on XM....believe ch 126...those black adults love what Mizzou players did. It might help Pinkel in recruiting. The callers are saying now Pinkel can go into these black homes and tell them he'll take care of their kids, he's concerned about any problems they might have on campus, etc.

There's now talk that good black athletes should attend HBCU's. I listened to a show after I posted earlier. I basically hit the nail on the head and had no idea they were talking about some of the things i said. Callers and talk show hosts said it would bring big time college football schools to their knees if these athletes started going to lesser schools and HBCU's if schools keep letting racial incidents happen. They said those racists would shape up quick if their college football and basketball teams started sucking.

Guess talk is trending about athletes need to pick other schools. But Mizzou is getting a lot of love. That's why those other SEC fans are mad...Mizzou might start causing problems at their schools...and they know they have a lot of problems. Now Mizzou football players stepping up could become a trend at other SEC, ACC, Southern Schools. Fans are now pissed. Could you imagine if Alabama or LSU football players threaten to not play in a big bowl game because of racial issues on campus. Better believe some presidents, etc would send in some resignation letters. Imagine if Kentucky basketball players threaten to sit out a season over race shite. That's what SEC fans are afraid of. It's coming to their school.

Like another Mizzou posters said on the Rant, same result would have happened at other SEC schools. But the big bad SEC ranters don't think so....well already happened at other schools with people being kicked out schools, frats in trouble, mascot changed, etc. Imagine if football or basketball players threatened to protest and not play, yes Top officials would be gone..... considering how easily they get rid of racist students, state/confederate flags and mascots. Look at the OU expample, did that kid get kicked out of school or suspended?? It wasn't about those black students on campus being pissed, they didn't want athletes getting pissed, parents of future recruits getting pissed. That shite was on national news, youtube, etc. OU stepped in quick.

College football in the south is more popular than the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. College football in Missouri is not more popular than NFL, MLB, etc and Mizzou officials stepped down. Yes the results would be the same at other SEC schools. Fans deep down know it and are afraid of it.

Still feel athletes shouldn't get involved in social issues. I watch sports to get away from that shite.

We'll never know, but I don't think Pinkel would have had the chance to discuss recruiting with as many potential recruits if he hadn't supported the black players. The talent pool would have been diminished as several players and families would have just said don't bother. Getting time with the recruits and families is the only way to battle negative recruiting.

Allowing the ones who wanted to protest to protest and allowing the ones to practice who wanted to practice would have completely defused the situation on the football team.
I disagree completely. Forcing everybody to pick a side would have been more divisive and the effects would have taken longer to get over. The way they handled it let players decide if they wanted to say something or just wait until it passed.

No doubt. Black and white players were working out and watching film together.

I can agree with the lesser of two evils. I don't think GP made it as long and far as he has without knowing the political side of things. I still feel he is trying to distance himself from this stuff. Who can blame him? But he also picked up a big recruiting chip in all of this too. Whether you agree with the protest or not, he backed his players even though they as many others might have been played by the protesters in the end.

GP took the only stance he could. The football team got played like a bar room piano; too bad most will never realize it and the rest won't admit it.
