He really had no way to come out of this clean

A: He supports his players. Avoids the racist tag, but in the process majorly pisses off his white conservative fans/boosters to the point of stopping donations/boycott

B: He doesn't support his players. He wins the hearts of said white conservative boosters but is labeled a racist by the liberal media and black community and essentially chokes his ability to recruit black players

I think he went with the lesser of two evils, but damn what a situation to be in...

C. He calls a team meeting, gets informed of what exactly is happening and as a leader of young men... explains to them what obligation they have to their University, fans and alumni in fulfilling their duties. Then explain to them other avenues they can take to make their voice heard. And not to make brash decisions on emotion alone.

eta - I hate the situation for fans who have to endure the crapfest that's been going on and all. It would have to suck big time. There needs to be a purge though. There have been some extremely horrible decisions made, without taking the time to be informed of what was going on.

Your scenario would lead to him being slammed by the media and the black community as a racist. Plain and simple

The football players were asked to do this. When they were asked why they didn't and their response was Coach Pinkel wouldn't let us...well, there you have it.

Maybe that's an option before the 24 hour news cycle we now live in, but now it's not.

You essentially just reworded option B

Hunter, I'm not sure the timeline allowed for option C. I believe the players had made their decision before they talked to GP. Leaving him the option to support or not.

Also, while it's a nuanced argument, there is a big difference between supporting the players and agreeing with their cause. I think his initial wording was that he supported them in their need to take a stand - or something to that effect. Not that he believed they were right. They told him they thought it might be the most important thing they ever did. What do you say to that? The entire brand is that Mizzou is a family. Which means that publicly they present a united front. So it doesn't seem to me that he had a lot of choices other than the route he took.

Don't get me wrong - I hate it, everything about it. I think they got suckered by a conniving, manipulative POS activist. Racism should be vilified and wiped out, no question. But I hate everything about how this played out.

If he would have been honest about it after the fact, I'd have more respect for him. The whole "I didn't really know what was going on" doesn't cut it after the fact.

That's another important point in this. The players publicly announced the strike before speaking with Pinkel. Only after that, was there a team meeting. Which I'll point out lasted an hour and who is to say during that time period he did not try to talk them out of it?

I think that's what has so many up in arms and disgusted about it. Racial tensions have gone downhill under the current President, and then this happens... with football. Which is King in the South. The only color that matters is team colors. And it got threatened.

I have to agree with you there. But as we all know, GP is a football coach, not a public speaker. He was VERY ill-prepared for that interview. Someone in SID or Media Relations failed. Big time.

We get it. Believe me, we get it. And I have no doubt that the AD gets it too - if anecdotal evidence of donations being pulled is true.

Race is a really difficult topic. It brings out the worst in people, and makes everyone defensive - no one wants that label put on them. But it's a microcosm of one of the biggest problems in the country today, IMO. We are SO quick to demonize anyone who doesn't 100% share our opinions. We have this "I'm right, you're wrong" attitude, and make it worse with labels. Liberal. Conservative. Libtard. Nutjob. Racist. SJW. And the list goes on. As a country, we seem more divided than ever, at a time when we should be pulling together to face the outside forces that threaten our existence. It's a frightening time. I'm hopeful that in the aftermath of this, the team will face the adversity and pull together, and that the University can as well.

I also hope this Butler is exposed for the fraud he is. I saw pics of the home he grew up on on another site. Damn. That guy has NO place calling anyone out on their supposed "privilege."

Pretty much most of it. As much as football is King, I think people are sick of the racial narrative as much or more. I think that's why the backlash from other fanbases so much.

It's become the new McCarthyism.

Disagree with them and they want your ability to make a living.

It's not so new. I wrote an English paper about the New McCarthyism in my English 20 class back in 1989. My professor said my writing was very good, but disagreed with my premise that liberals shutting down oppositional views was McCarthyism because McCarthy was bad and what she and her friends were doing was good. That's almost a direct quote. So, she gave me a C for the paper because of my belief. She said without my connection to McCarthy, it would have been an A paper. So for a follow up, I wrote two papers on defunding the National Endowment for the Arts (she was an Art History Minor).

How can he be honest?

"Hey man. I only did this to not be labeled a racist and not destroy recruiting"

YOU might have respected that, but he can't say that shite. We all know that's what he did but he can't actually say it.

Be honest by not saying "I didn't know what was really going on." He doesn't have to address everything. He could've easily said,"I simply wanted to stand with my players and support them," and sidestepped any other question.

He did well in the press conference, the first few minutes of the KK interview today weren't too shitty. I'm guessing he really took a dump in the last half though, or a lot of people are too sensitive to this whole thing.

Was it really that bad?
