Has Cook Maximized His Talent?

I appreciate his efforts. And his improved play.

But he’s wilted under the bright lights in our two biggest games. Turns the ball over twice vs LSU late including a pick six.

That pass to UGA’s nose tackle is one of the worst decisions you will see at any level. Then the pass that can’t happen for the second pick.

He missed an open Norfleet in the EZ. He has tunnel vision with LB3.

He has 6 TOs in his last 4 games.

The 212 passing yards in his high water mark since LSUs 411.

It’s frustrating because the talent is there at skill positions. But his arm is getting worse as the season progresses. The D and the run game are bailing us out.

Now. Some of that is likely the play designs and strategy which have been mediocre for weeks now. We shouldn’t be struggling to break 200 passing again.

There is a reason Eli was looking all over the portal for a QB in the off-season. Cook has been much improved but as we’ve seen he buckles under pressure

I don't blame Cook even though I am frustrated with him today. The offense isn't playing to his strengths like before. Does it have something to do with Drink carrying a play sheet?

I don't know why all of a sudden everything is a back shoulder throw. He doesn't have that kind of arm. He's at his best in rhythm, medium range, throwing to several different receivers, with the occasional deep post throw. Now the throws are to the edges with that tired arm.

If you had to guess, would you guess Drink or our OC was calling the plays?

OC is calling running plays.

Drink is calling some pass plays.

That would explain the lost of rhythm in the playcalling we saw in the early season. Also the lack of TE usage again.

I think it began with Drink dictating the 3rd quarter plan and has slowly increased.

Guess Desiree didn’t think she’d need to add a provision in his contract about the play sheet. Seems clear she should. Cook has made poor decisions, but it seems we’ve abandoned the middle of the field and hitting guys in stride on crossing routes and intermediate deep middle in favor of Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson plays.

Looking at Cooks big pass yardage explosion games:

5 players caught balls today. Mediocre passing.
4 guys caught passes against SC. Mediocre passing.
7 guys caught passes against UK, the big play wasn’t Cook. Mediocre passing.

8 guys caught a pass against LSU. Big day.
8 guys caught a pass against Vandy. Big day.
5 against Memphis. Big day.
8 against State. Big day.

Seems like 8 players touching the ball is the magic number. This shite where we target 5 or fewer leads to poor results generally unless LB3 goes off.

LB3 was hobbled. Clearly. And they couldn’t expand things out.

I don’t know how much of that is Cook not seeing guys open without coaches film, but it’s criminal the lack of targets Norfleet gets.

Cook exceeded his talent.

Watch Penix or Daniels (or Beck) throw ... with arm talent (zip), the middle of the field is wide open ...

Love Cooks heart but he isn't him to go to another level.

Cook is playing way above his potential. I still think Horn would be doing just as good or better. There is a lot of bandwagon Cook fans and over the next few weeks we will see if they fall off.

I’m not blaming this loss on Cook. The only people that could get open was Wease and Burden and both of them missed balls they should have caught. Burden must have tweaked his ankle in the 4th he wasn’t in for some plays late in the game. Norfleet got open a few times in the flat but Cook missed him.

3rd and long to medium we weren’t getting off the field. DB’s made mistakes in coverage and not having Bailey really hurt. Chuck Hicks is not very good and missed plays Bailey would have made.

They are a better than us, but if we would have caught a few breaks we could have won. If Bailey plays I think we would have won.

The pass interference call was terrible.

Miller was open enough. I’m not sure the scheme was good enough.

You’re telling me the best bets due to coverages were back shoulder passes spammed over and over?

We kept throwing jump balls to the sidelines and rarely used the middle of the field:

The playbook, with regards to the QB arm, has been pared to what the QB can do.

My only frustration yesterday was similar to others ... where was Norfleet?

2 high safety look ... mid-cross wease and burden and take off the top with Johnson/Cooper in a go ...

What was most frustrating was Schrader was popping off 7-8 yards a carry late and we start putting the game in Cooks inaccurate arm (multiple sideline routes were inaccurately thrown, underthrown, etc) ...

Even if we had Dan Marino under center, Marshal Faulk and the 98 Rams receiving core ... I'm not sure Drink would know how to scheme it ...

It’s a crime they’re too dumb to get Norfleet involved. A 6’7 TE with soft hands should be an inaccurate QBs best friend as a safety valve short/intermediate. Hell. It should be TE pass plays to settle Cook down when he makes dumb decisions.

Our we using him too much to block?

Martz didn’t use Faulk enough against the Patriots. Which was frustrating because he did the opposite against the Eagles the previous week in the NFCCG. Some coaches get enamored with their “toys” that they forget what got them to that particular point.

Exactly. Faulk on delayed screens was 10-15 yards a pop ... and when safeties cheat up to defend, take off the top with Bruce and Holt ...

Football scheming isn't that tough when you have a QB and weapons. The problem for the tigers is they only have half of that equation ... which has been evident all season.

What will be most frustrating is when Drink trots out his future son-in-law in 2024 with Horn, Johnson, and (insert transfer 4*) on the bench ...

Watching USC/Wash, LSU/Bama, and multiple other games, we are/will be a QB/better scheme away from the next tier ...
