COLUMBIA, Mo. – David Gibbs has joined the Mizzou Football coaching staff as an assistant coach, as announced today by Head Coach Barry Odom. Gibbs, who will be on the defensive staff, is a 25-year veteran of the coaching industry, including 11 seasons as a defensive coordinator in the college ranks, and nine seasons as a defensive backs coach for three different NFL teams. Details of Gibbs' contract with Mizzou will be released, along with his specific job title, pending completion of the human resources process. Gibbs comes to Mizzou after spending the last four seasons as defensive coordinator (2015-18) at Texas Tech, where his defenses became known as one of the top turnover-creating units in the country. In 2017, Tech led the Big 12 Conference and ranked sixth nationally with 29 forced turnovers on the year, including four defensive scores, which was the most by a Texas Tech defense since 2001. From 2013-17, Gibbs' defenses at Tech and Houston forced a combined 140 turnovers, which was tied for most in the nation among any defensive coordinator during that five-year span.

Was he fired from Tech or was he just not making that much money that he took a lower position with us?

Probably going to be co-defensive coordinator/d-backs coach?

I thought he was going to houston?

Wells didn’t retain him when he took the Tech job. Then Houston fired Applewhite

I haven't been paying much attention to the coaching carousel.

I thought Holgersen hired him at houston a few days ago? I guess he said frick houston.

I did see his name connected to the Houston job, but don’t know what happened.

Sr.CB on the 1990 Buffs team in the "5th Down Game".

Strike one for just walking in the door.

Last time I checked, Charles Johnson still hadn’t scored.

Also promoted McGee. Not surprised with that one just curious to see if he’ll coach WR, TE or QB

So JQ, Gibbs has a hell of a resume. Is he going to be DC? or a position coach?

I have no idea, but I assume he’ll be coaching outside LBs.

It’s possible he gets a “co-DC” title

Anyone know if he is a good recruiter?

He’ll recruit at a “Mizzou” level, I’m sure.

What’s impressive about him is his defenses have always created tons of turnovers. That’s an area we can certainly improve

Texas Tech - Ranked #119 at 473.2 yards allowed per game.

I guess, whatever.

That's why this a a bit confusing to me. It's a hell of a hire, but how does he bring his success to Mizzou unless he has full control? It's like hiring Dooley but making him run everything passed Hill.

Gibbs obviously has some things figured out and has translated his knowledge to on field success. Give him the reins.

I'm curious how it's all going to work out...CO-DC maybe?

Either way I like what Gibbs did with turnovers for Tech.

No reason he can't have the same success here.

Hargreaves will coach all LBs. I think Gibbs gets introduced as the CB coach.

Just curious. Is this guy any relation to the Gibbs that coached at OU after Switzer?

Father is Coach Alex Gibbs. Don't know about OU, Alex was an NFL position coach. I think O-Line, but don't recall for sure.

Thanks Literalist. You are right. Alex Gibbs was the brains behind the cut blocking lines that paved the way for Terrelle Davis's crazy rushing totals with the Broncos.
