You know what's gonna happen, Guerendo will go on IR, Schrader makes the 53, McCaffery gets a high ankle sprain week 1, and Cody will lead the NFC in rushing.
There aren't any details to report, but Elijah Mitchell is apparently injured and missed their last practice. LINK
The team has signed former RB Matt Brieda as a camp body, but for now it's CMC, Jordan Mason and Cody No. 3.
Kyle Shanahan should have an update on Mitchell today at his press conference.

Here's an interview yesterday with the 49ers RB coach.
I can't read his body language when talking about Cody if he's not wanting to gush or isn't as gung ho as some are.

Allow me to translate...The moment the draft was over, I demanded we sign Cody because he will either make the team or force these other guys to act like pros, and get better in order to beat him.
Basically I made a sandwich with hard worker McCaffery on top and hard worker Cody at the bottom. Let's see who gets squeezed out of the middle and thrown away.

We've seen what he can do given an opportunity. Bet against him at your own risk, right?

I predicted a high ankle sprain but I will take a calf strain.

From today's Nick Wagoner's practice notes...
- Noted the Mason blitz pickup earlier against Warner. Cody Schrader had one of his own against Jalen Graham. Graham looked like he expected to run through Schrader and was stood up instead. Kyle Shanahan and Bobby Turner talk often about the importance of playing without the ball in your hands. Good signs for both in their pursuits of spots on the depth chart.

Listen to what this regular camp observer says about Schrader. They're talking about the depth in each room.
This should be time stamped to the right spot.

Sadly this type of stuff is exactly what has to happen for guys like Cody to get a fair chance in the NFL.

Those who look beyond the official 5 carries for 6 yards saw something different.
Including a 30 yard KO return. Plus a 12 yard run and extra reception negated by penalty

Cody Schrader
» The stat sheet says very little, but anyone who watched the game saw that Schreder was excellent, not only as a runner but also as a pass protector. He’s the team’s No. 3 running back until Elijah Mitchell comes back.

The current healthiest back, Jordan Mason, was pulled due to a minor injury so Cody Schrader started tonight for the 49ers against the New Orleans Saints. I'll be curious what the pundits have to say afterward, but Cody looked fairly pedestrian. The 49ers OLine is in shambles and former Redskin and one-year 49er Chase Young started and blew up plays left and right.
I'm sure the film geeks will dissect it, but currently I'd project Cody to the practice squad since he hasn't flashed yet in a game.

I'm not a Cody apologist, but at the NFL level it would take an extremely gifted RB to make up for a bad OL. Even at Mizzou, look at the difference in his success behind the 2023 OL compared to 2024 which was much better.
If you want RB to be successful behind a bad OL, go get Derrick Henry or Brian Robinson. They are big enough to get yardage by pure power. But I don't think the 49ers expect Cody or even McCaffery to become dominant RBs without help of a decent OL.

Cody had one decent run negated by a penalty.
That pass in the end zone was behind him.
The line opened nothing...
and yet he had one very nice 1st down rush up the gut.
I agree, he didn't shine but he didn't get much help.
I'm pulling hard for that kid.

He was cut. But could still make the practice squad. I didn't know teams had 16 practice squad players.

I'm sure he'll make the practice squad. Also significant is the 49ers IR'd Elijah Mitchell for the season. The other rookie RB who made the team, Isaac Guerendo, has a long history of injury and Christian McCaffery is still nursing a calf injury from last season. One injury and my guess is he would be elevated to the 53 man roster so long as he's his worker bee self.
Their offensive line is (and remains) a mess, but hopefully he sticks and stays for now.

Good, now he can get picked up by the Raiders and be a fan favorite. They almost picked him but went with a Division 2 RB instead.
