I know this is another thread that really shouldn't happen.

And I'm still in the "wait and see camp" but when we were out there looking for a new coach, who did you really want?

Now before we have some people answer with "Saban, Meyer etc"

I'm talking of all the names that were realistically thrown around during the search.

For me, it was Lincoln Riley. Now I'm not sure how real that was, and it was a few years back, but I do remember that name thrown around a bit during the search.
Now I think the guy is pretty much locked into the OU job baring any Scandal or the NFL comes calling.

I wanted Rick Bisachi or whatever his name was.

In all seriousness, I was a Lincoln Riley fan, but he was unproven, and he also wouldn't have stayed here long. I just liked the fact that he was offensive-minded and had a good pedigree in that department. I also wasn't opposed to Lane Kiffin, but there is no way in hell he and Tanner would have meshed.

see this is why I kinda wanted him.
We literally had NO clue what we were getting, and I liked that.

How I felt as well.

I guess you're right here. As he could have definitely jumped back to OU after Stoops stepped down. Although I think the reason he didn't take any offer was Stoops told him to stay as he was stepping down soon.

So really its another unrealistic choice, so yea frick I'm wrong and that was a bad post.

I wanted Tom Herman. See how much I know. The other names that were rumored to be in the mix were Smart, Lincoln Riley and Muschamp. I wasn't sold on Kirby because of his lack of head coaching experience. Anyone who thinks he could do here what he is doing at Georgia are delusional. Lincoln Riley was the same for me plus his lack of ties to the SEC. I still think we got the right fit. He needs time. If we had hired any of those other candidates, I think we would be in much the same boat that we are now.We need SEC defensive players and depth. This cannot be fixed in a few years. The Jaycee Horns are few and far between. Most defensive guys need a year or more to be strong enough to make an impact.

I still wouldn't mind Tom Herman.

I just don't think I wanted him because he was set up for a much bigger job.

I see NOTHING wrong with what he wanted and how he viewed us. You always wanna take the better job, even in life outside of sports.

You're not going to sign onto some shite firm and try and "build them up" when someone like Goldman Sachs gives you all of the resources and money to do the exact same.

That said, is it just me or has the state talent been very low? I will admit as I've gotten older I haven't paid as much attention, but just looking at the in state talent under Spurrier we have NFL players in state on those teams.

Sounds like we had Smart in the bag before UGA nabbed him up, would have loved that.

Honestly, the one quality I do like for Muschamp above all candidates is that because were given him a second chance that he would be in it for the long hall. Smart and Herman were always going to take bigger jobs if they found quick success here.

Of course there's a double edged quality to that. If Smart or Herman left within 2-3 years, that's a rough thing for our program to go through right after Spurrier's disastrous ending. However, the only way a bigger school would have come callin' would have been if we were actually winning here and building the program back up.

Talent in South Carolina has been down since Clowney left.

Agreed.

I think that is also a factor.

That's basically what I feel too.

This as well.
Texas or Georgia weren't going to come after guys that went 6-6 or 7-5.

I wanted Bill Clark after UGa took Smart. yeah - he's all the buzz on this forum now, but nobody would've cared in Dec 2015 and our own fans would have been irate. Clark waited out 2014 and then committed long-term to UAB right about the time Spurrier quit - even though UAB wasn't fielding a team in 2016, so I doubt Ray even knew or thought about him. he's legit and has deep ties to HS football in AL. he played for, then coached and won big with the Alabama breed of Gamecock, too.

never wanted Herman mostly because UTAustin was gonna open up and he would have Kiffin'd our job. I also didn't think he could recruit well here at USC, either.

I was fine with Muschamp for recruiting alone once Ray started in with the likes of Joey Jones, Willie Targgart and nutjob Rodriguez. Ray needed to get the job filled asap at that point.

Will just needed to be better on saturdays than 5 other mediocre-to-bad East coaches in place when he was hired. sadly, he can't beat Mark Stoops and struggles with situational offense.

he's here through 2020 at minimum so 'it is what it is'.

I wanted Justin Fuente initially, then once he went to VT I wanted Lincoln Riley, Mike Leach, or Jeff Brohm. I thought Kirby Smart would fare about like Muschamp at Florida, which obviously appears to have been wrong, but I don't think he could do what he's doing at UGA here.

I really just wanted someone focused on a modern offense. Now that we've got Muschamp I think I'm about like a lot of other people in being pretty frustrated every time he reverts to the overly conservative, defense first approach. I like him and think he will 100% leave this team more talented overall than he found it. And in a year or two we will almost definitely be a top 25 defensive unit, but I don't want us to then go out and try to win every game 17-3.

There's still hope, because we've actually really made good strides on offense this year. Just have to keep improving, and Muschamp has to trust BMac to do his job.

I liked him too.

I was a Herman guy. I am not sure that "now" he would have been a good fit. When that fell through I was undecided but Muschamp was fine with me when he was announced.

Initially wanted Smart, but once UGA fired Richt, I knew that ship sailed.

Riley would have been a fun gamble, but outside everything else I guess Muschamp was the best of what was left. As others have said, he'll have this job for about as long as he wants it.

These are the two I had assumed we would end up with after the Herman fiasco.

I'm not upset over Muschamp as some seem to be. He is still tweaking his philosophy and situational coaching. Our offense is better than his offense at florida and our defense is lacking depth and injury riddled atm.
We have to get out of the vacuum of game to game kneejerk reactions.

Agree.

However this past weekend made it difficult for me to not react to it.
