Hard to say how any programs' future will look after firing a coach. Numerous schools spend decades in the wilderness: UGA, Nebraska, Miami, Tennessee, just to name a few. I DO think Ed needed to go, but I think firing him then keeping him on till the end of the season is about the worst decision Admin. could have made.

Judging from the responses, it seems like most assume there is some mythical coach on the staff who could take the interim role and possibly compete for the job.
No such person exists. Not by a long shot.

Of course not, that's not the play here. This wasn't a quick fix decision. At this point you take whatever comes in the next 2 seasons and put the pieces into play for 3 years down the road. Most of us understand this and welcome the change as long as the right hire is made.
This is exactly why Drinkwitz is going to need more time. He came in at the wrong time when COVID-19 came in 2020. year. The 2021 was actually the first year of a normal season. Recruiting wasn't great first year. This coming recruiting class is a lot better. It will take couple more of very good recruiting classes to get started the roster to respectability. Then bring them all of his recruits on the field at the same time. That takes about 4 years. I think Drinkwitz is 2+ years away from getting a very good team. Plus he is still learning on the job since he has very little experience as a HC and just now starting to understand what he will need to compete at the next level. This year is a washup. Not matter since he doesn't want to give away some of his future schemes. Might just use current and some lesser schemes to get through the year and save the better schemes for next two years with better talents on the field. Look at FSU, Nebraska, and others that are starting over that have been very good in the past.

I mean, what do you do, you don't have O, you have some no name assistant and other assistants getting some extra cash. It really won't matter either way. Now, recruiting, that will be a problem.

LSU fans tend to believe that they'll automatically be contenders due to the talent in their state no matter who the coach is. They say things like "if Miles or Orgeron could do it, any half decent coach can too."
But I've got news for them, all that's keeping them from completely falling off into the abyss and becoming Tennessee is a mediocre coach and a couple down years. In-state talent doesn't mean jack shite, and it definitely doesn't make for automatic success like they believe.
Florida, Texas, and California all have massive amounts of blue chip recruits and you don't see programs from those states automatically winning anything or even contending for titles. On the reverse end of that, Alabama, South Carolina (Clemson), Oklahoma, and Ohio aren't chock full of decent recruits but those programs still win.
TLDR- having recruits in your back yard doesn't automatically mean you'll be a successful program
