I had to look to see if what I heard on the radio was true and sure enough it is.

For over 50 years, both before WWII and post WWII until 1963, virtually every game MSU played Auburn and Alabama was on the road @ AU and @Alabama.

Interesting that we played Auburn in Birmingham a bunch of times. We also played both in Jackson, Ms as our so called home game for years afterwards along with LSU and some other Sec schools.

If for no other reason for MSU fans to love Jackie Sherrill is was him putting a stop to not having a true home field advantage some 30+ years ago. Good grief I knew we played on the road for years but had no idea just how bad it was.

Sherrill was still a player at Alabama when the home and home started. Prior to that, yeah, it was heavily a road game at Tuscaloosa or Birmingham. Our home games were often in Jackson but that was our doing more so than Alabama's.

If I remeber right, there was at least one double-header. Both Ole Miss and Miss State had games in Jackson on the same day.

Tide and Auburn had doubleheaders at Legion Field also. In addition to its claim as "Football Capital of the South", it also owns the record for most hubcaps stolen in a 24 hour period

You just realized this? The same for LSU. We played in Baton Rouge every year because they would split the gate revenue with us. We made more money on the road than in Starkville.

I went to Ole Miss/LSU in the day and MSU/Alabama that night in 1969. Ole Miss beat LSU 26-23. Bama beat MSU 23-19.

Not sure about how the highways were back in the day, but right now it shows Starkville to Legion Field is a 2 hour, 16 minute drive.

From Auburn to Legion Field it is a 2 hour, 11 minute drive.

Seems like a good spot at the time considering the on campus stadium sizes of that era.

Our stadium was small and back then it was a long arse drive to Starkville. The population of MS was near the center so Jackson made sense

I remember when hwy 82 was a 2 lane to Starkville and took almost 3 hours to get there from the delta. Now it takes a hour 15 min

The MS/AL all-star game has been held in alabama for a really long time. soon as it came to Mississippi, we started winning it more often...imagine that.

we just let the state of Alabama run roughshod over us. its pathetic.

Not every year but it did happen. Usually the week State Fair was in town and back when it wasn’t a deadly adventure. Certainly made for a long day if you did all 3.

Well who tf would want to go to Starkville in the 60s? They've only just started to make it barely habitable in the last decade

Yeah, I never did understand why the HS all-star game was always in Alabama too but you’re right, lost about every year until we got some in MS.
