Do you really in your heart believe this 3-3-5 defense based on the defensive roster we have? I am very familiar with Arnetts philosophy but I don’t think we have the guys yet to run it. He will surprise people at times even this year but we are at least a year away, probably 2 to have that talent for it to work.

A lot of you say we’ll just try to outscore people but this is a new offense lacking a spring.

If he does well this year then I hope we open up the payroll book and sign him for 4 years with a huge buyout.

It’s gonna be a long year for state
Very long.
This may be the worst year in Mississippi for football in decades.

Florida fan confirmed lol. Honestly speaking I think our D (other than the secondary) will be fine. Linebackers are decent and same for the DL. Not elite but not bad either

I’ve very concerned about it, but nothing we can do but hope that the players we have make it work.
We do have some very talented players on the defense. Depth is the huge issue.

Our defense will most likely be a train wreck this year.

I hate it. I think it’s going to be a disaster. We are going to lose to Someone 70-63 and it’s going to be disgusting. We are two years removed from having the best defense in the nation

I am also concerned about the Air Raid in a state that produces big lineman and great running backs. I get we can recruit out of state but we need to keep our elite talent home as much as we can.

But nothing we can do.

If Joe Lee Dunn can go to State and in one year with the little talent he had make that defense better in his 3-3-5, Arnett can too.

You defense was not good last year. It will be better this year.

You will have games that the offense will have to win.

Over all..... I think you are over thinking it.

First time I agree with you on something. I look at this year on defense more of trying to confuse and at times the gamble pays off big.

I’m always realistic when it comes to MSU.

The best thing that could happen this year is to move the ball and keep our defensive starters off the field and rested as much as possible.

I mean this defense isn't going to finish in the top half of the league but I don't think it would have regardless of the scheme they were running.

I do like the Arnett hire, he is a Rocky Long disciple who had some really good defenses at SDSU. We'll see how it translates to the SEC but that's probably the best DC hire we could've realistically made given that there wasn't a Grantham or Shoop type name really available like there was in 2016 and 2017.

You can take one glance at the two deep in the secondary and realize that this defense is going to have some struggles. I don't agree with the perception that it's a defense that is totally devoid of talent though, it's a very young group. They'll be better in a year or two but this year is going to be trial by fire with many of those guys. The talent isn't what it was two years ago but I'm not sure you can bank on finding two JUCO first round draft picks or a generational talent like Simmons every year.

Just prepare yourself for State to lose some high scoring games this year but recognize it's a young unit that should gradually get better if Arnett is a competent DC like I think he is.

LOL! How does a MSU fan NOT know their own history with the 3-3-5?

The man that invented it was no Rocky Long. It was Joe Lee Dunn. And state ran the 3-3-5 for years. it was the defense that took you to the SECC with little talent.

So yes! it works in the SEC.

SDS defense took them to 10-3. Not the offense.

LINK

Ranked:

5th in total defense.
2nd in rush defense
2nd in scoring defense
16th in passing efficiency defense

Their offense... 110th in the nation. Yet they beat BYU, UCLA...etc

The beauty of the 3-3-5 is that the confusion it creates on the OL and QB.

Last year the defense was an discombobulated mess with the suspensions of some key players for 8 games.

When it was at full strength the defense was salty but that was a rarity last year.

This year really is a crap shoot but so are a number of other teams including LSU.

I think we have good talent defensively (Moorhead for all the criticism he has received) recruited well and cupboard is far from bare.

Regardless of the scheme, a new coaching staff rarely has much success in its first year.
Unfortunately for us that will be the case across the board. Our defense will IMO will surprise people by being better than advertised. I predict our offense is going to struggle more than we expect it. However, I do believe both sides of the LOS will improve during the season barring any happening i. e. COVID outbreak within the team, multiple injuries at key positions etc.

We will see.

Going to disagree with that.

How many DCs has MSU gone through over the past 12 years??

And they have developed a name as a tough defense.

They've also never thrown the ball 50 times a game.

I’d be more worried about your head coach coming to work at noon and knocking off after practice.
