A tip of the hat to the Big Stick himself, Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

Now some will focus on Teddy being a "progressive" and absolutely lose their minds, but it meant something else 120 years ago. Get over it.

He was a conservationist but not a tree hugger. He was a legit cowboy, and also a man born to upper crust of society. He was a warrior and a peacemaker. He might be the most over the top manly President we've ever had, but he was in poor health his entire life.

Christopher Nolan based his version of Batman on Theodore Roosevelt. Why? Teddy willed himself into being great. When you read his many books one constant refrain is that Teddy himself will tell you he was horrible at almost everything. A bad shot. A poor boxer. Not gifted as a student. But he worked at everything he was bad at and became gifted in it.

Only after his beloved son died in World War I did that great, overpowering, will fade and with it Roosevelt himself.

"Death had to take him in his sleep, for if Roosevelt had been awake, there would have been a fight."

I have two Teddy Roosevelt Terriers. They’re 12 weeks old today. Happy TR Day!

He had a big personality, but his successor, Taft, was a much better president.
