SDH and Holcombe inside with Mosley and Brown outside. A little scary. Glad we have some easy games coming up.

The guys with most action against FSU were Holcombe, SDH, Moses and Mosley (outside of the guys hurt).

With Evans and Jennings out for a few weeks and us playing a team we should beat easily Saban may do a variety of experimenting. So guys like Chris Allen and Ben Davis could get reps.

Saban did say in his presser that he isn't a fan of moving an ILB to OLB (or the other way around) because it leaves a hole left by the guy moving. He said it more likely means time for others to step up.

I'm curious about Chris Allen. I wonder if his high school coach's situation is causing us to hesitate with playing him.

he is either cleared by the NCAA or not cleared at this point. If he does not play then it may be obvious the NCAA has not cleared him

Think it's SDH and Holcombe in the middle, then Mosley and Allen(I don't think there's an eligibility issue).

Though I wouldn't hate a 4-2-5 with Brown or Harrison acting as a big nickel hybrid.

Why are not listing Wilson? Is he hurt?

4-2-5 is actually a really interesting idea and maybe one we should consider in light of losing like 47 LBs last week. Put Payne and Frazier at DT and Hand and Raekwon at DE with SDH and Wilson at LB. We would be impossible to run on in that formation but would likely have to blitz from the secondary quite a lot to generate pressure. That may be better than playing young OLBs if they aren't ready for prime time.

He'll play a ton, but he's listed as Hamilton's backup at the same time.

That kind of reminds me of the '09 defense: Massive DT's, large athletic DE's; establish and control the line, bring pressure with a blazing quick DB.

Tide practice report: Changes underway at OLB | al.com
quote:

-- With Miller, Lewis and Jennings not working in individual drills, Jamey Mosley and Mekhi Brown led the rotation of outside linebackers. They were followed by VanDarius Cowan, Chris Allen, Ben Davis and LaBryan Ray.

Davis was dressed in a scout-team jersey and the inclusion of Ray was notable considering he is a defensive lineman and wears No. 89. Ray definitely stood out.

-- Rashaan Evans was spotted in a black, non-contact jersey after injuring his groin in the victory over Florida State on Saturday. With Evans not involved in drills, Shaun Dion Hamilton and Keith Holcombe led the parade of inside linebackers. Hamilton and Holcombe were followed by Dylan Moses, Mack Wilson, Joshua McMillion and freshman Markail Benton.

Why Alabama isn't in panic mode after losses at OLB | al.com
quote:

Keith Holcombe doesn't call himself a Mike or Will.

He's a linebacker.

And on Monday, Alabama coach Nick Saban said the redshirt junior could even fill in as an edge rusher.

Holcombe's reaction?

"That's the coaches' decision," he said. "If they want me to do that, I'm more than happy to do whatever I have to do to help this team out."

Holcombe is confident he could buttress the corps of outside linebackers whose depth has been impinged after Terrell Lewis and Christian Miller went down with season-ending injuries and Anfernee Jennings suffered a high-ankle sprain that could keep him sidelined for multiple games.

That's because Alabama has a history of cross-training linebackers.

"It definitely helps," said Shaun Dion Hamilton, who started at the Mike spot last weekend in the Tide's victory over Florida State. "If something happens, the next man can step up and not lose a beat. It all goes back to Coach Saban getting us ready for a situation before it happens."

In many ways, Saban formulates these kinds of contingency plans before players even set foot on campus. Prior to his enrollment, freshman Van Darius Cowan anticipated playing inside at Alabama. He is now learning how to attack from the edge. In the nine months since he's been on campus, Dylan Moses has practiced with both linebacker position groups.

Rashaan Evans, meanwhile, has played with both.

"Being able to come from inside to outside and kind of help the pass rushers out as much as I can and get some pressure on the quarterback, I think that's the No. 1 thing," he said last month. "If you can do those things like that you can pretty much stop some pretty good offenses."

As Evans will attest, Saban and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt have created more flexibility with their personnel by giving several linebackers multiple roles.

"Once you figure out that concept of the defense, you can train anywhere," Holcombe said. "That's what we have trained ourselves with Coach Pruitt. Coach Pruitt has not been signaling us for one position. He's been rotating us out so we know all the defense and know all the positions...The more you know of every position and understand the concepts, the more you're going to play or the more helpful you're going to be to help the team."
