... i didn't understand who was really downfield illegally.
The refs called it on 87, but as you can see by the photos below, he wasn't even near the LOS. I think Todd B. tried to explain about a player being "covered up" by someone else outside of them on the LOS at the play start, but I can't see that either.
This play negated a big gain for the Tide, and ultimately Bama had to punt.

I think Stewart was covered up and the idiot refs got the wrong jersey number.

It was a bogus call. You actually have Deiter circled in the first picture. Hecaught the pass. Forristall is the player closest to Hurts in the first pic.

You are correct. I circled the wrong white guy.
But isn't Stewart still legal to go out for a pass?

All men in the backfield can go down field as well as the two men on the end.
I think they ruled Deiter was not far enough back, making Stewert ineligible to go downfield.
It's debatable if Deiter is far enough back.

Well if you really look at the top picture we only have 3 men in the backfield.
Maybe they fricked up the penalty too.

about Deiter being in the backfield, he is 2 yards deep.
If Deiter is considered on the line, we only had 2 in the backfield. (I think there was one more player below the screen shot (#3?) )

Receiver in Dieter's position should always glance over to the linesman to see if his arm is extended, indicating that the receiver closest to him is in the backfield. If not, he has to adjust. There's no guesswork.
Edit: that used to be the proper mechanic for officials...don't know if it still is.

I think that's exactly what happened. Think he was close enough to leave it to the ref's discretion...

It still is. The receiver should look at the official and signal with his hand if he's supposed to be on the line or in the backfield. If the official doesn't make the proper signal, the WR is supposed to adjust.
You know, I was excited about Dieter coming in to be a possession receiver and give us more experience. Except for a few plays all year, mostly downfield blocks, Dieter has been nothing but a penalty machine and a spectator on the field hoping to land a 'ship ring.

There was another receiver wide who covered up Stewart below the screen. At least that's what I remember from yesterday

In all fairness, it's not the ideal situation for him. If Coker was back, Dieter would have far more catches, imo.

You are missing a receiver outside of Dieter In your picture. Stewart signaled that he was off the line, Dieter is off the line and Cam Sims is on the line outside the numbers. The DA Line Judge said that Stewart was covered by Sims thus making him ineligible. Forristall came in motio and was the edge blocker. Total whiff by the officials!!

Legal. You don't have to have 4 in the backfield on offense, you just can't have more than 4.
