And yet somehow they have the 6th ranked team in America in time of possession

they average 35 minutes time of possession

So they complete A BUNCH of passes by percentage, and we need to intercept and bat down a bunch of balls

holy shite that's a crazy collection of percentages that usually work in the opposite direction, and you know it's no accident

Mike Leach intends it

gotta be a bunch of shovel passes I'd think, without even seeing film - a bunch of hitch screens too

I'm thinking they do a crapload of no-back five wide

And we'll drop 8. We must get some pressure on Rogers.

Glorified extended hand offs via quick screens.

Our secondary does well defending these, it's the deep one in one routes where they can't keep up. They either get beat deep in man or get killed underneath if playing a zone from these routes.

hell yes, and speed over power right?

why do big on big? No reason for it

Who gives a shite about a 320 pound slow arse offensive lineman they got? Just run a guy or three past him/them and destroy the QB

that should mean defensive back blitzes, 1 or 2 here and there at a time, not linebacker blitzes so much

Barry's got this - gonna be fun

variations of coverages

man/zone combos

matchup zone combos

straight man bring the kitchen sink at the QB

man free

roll to trips, post snap

etc etc

Hoping for a surprise but not confident in our D. Has looked worse and worse every week.

this is how you give up 600 yards passing to leach. The trick is play zone and don’t get greedy, rally and make tackles. Force them to Check it down again and again

Our defense actually marches up with leeches pass happy nonsense. We're pretty good at blowing up screens

you don't play just man, or just zone, at all

you mix it the hell up all day

combos

matchup zones

rolls

brackets

I’ve often said Odom has a bend don’t break defense, but I think it’s let them get into 1st and goal and they are limited in what they can do.

That works well if you don’t let them score on 50 yard bombs which we have a tendency to allow.

After watching the Kentucky game I don’t feel good at all with this game. MSU completely shut down Kentucky’s run game

Easier to do when they don’t pass.

I think if we ran the 2m drill the whole game we would score most drives, but our defense will die.

There is no question that MSU will have success stopping the run to start with, Kentucky didn't have the team to stretch the field tho either. If the line gives KJ time and he can hit the occasional long throw, it will free up the run game.

Turnovers will once again be massive as well. Kentucky only lost by 14 on the road while losing the turnover margin by 4. That was the difference in the game.

No surprise but we are +4 turnover margin in our wins and -2 in our losses.

If we take care of the ball, we tend to either win or have a shot at winning. If we don't... well...

MSU is running a gimmick offense, and I know that will infuriate some MSU fans... but there is nothing wrong with a gimmick offense if you can run it well. Army has had a meh year by their standards but they will almost certainly go to a bowl game again this year running the antiquated triple option with a team of players that probably wouldn't make most SEC team's practice squad.

Leach is running a passing version of the triple option... and Leach, for the record, loves the triple option. He just goes about it differently by chewing up the clock and yards with short passes. You have to beat him the same way you beat a triple option team. Play assignment football, don't make bad reads, and make tackles in front of you.

The key to a gimmick offense like he runs (and again gimmick is not a bad thing if it works) is that he wants to get a feel for what you are doing and then make little adjustments. You got to give him some different looks and keep him from setting things up.

Probably one of the better Defensive Coordinators in the country. He deserves a blank check at this point
