I've said for a while that we cant just fire CDM just to fire him without an upgrade, but looking through the names that LSU fans are throwing around for their next HC, I really don't see one that I'd trade for Mullen.
Aranda - Unproven as a HC
Brady - Dont see him coming back to CFB, no HC exp.
Fickell - Dont know much about him
Kiffin - Would be entertaining but the sanctions would rain down upon us.
Franklin - I guess the best choice I see
Herman - Uh, no.. Just no. I dont see any Florida boys that wanna smooch it up with a HC.
Since we cant get Chip, would Scott Frost be ready to leave the cornfields?

He has kicked arse at Cincinnati. I know it's not p5 but he has done a great job there.

If sticklin had not given Mulligan a extension last year we would be stuck.
But the only coach in that group I would want would be Fickell.
He could turn Florida around almost immediately. And probably have a top 5 recruiting class in 23

Frost used Nebraska level talent n lost to 2 top 10 teams (OU / Mich) by 10 pts combined. Lost to Michigan St in OT by a fg
Did very well last time he was in Florida.

I like Kiffin's style, I think he'd be awesome at UF, if he could nail his DC hire we'd be a damn fun team.
I do think Aranda would be a good choice too, not proven but I can see him figuring it out and being a top notch coach.
Everyone else on that list is a hard pass.

It's also important that we have a coach that can recruit more than 3 star talent. We need to keep these 5 star kids from leaving the state.

The Michigan loss was due to his dumbass QB fumbling but he absolutely has made some boneheaded decisions in a lot of their losses. Also their lack of discipline after 4 years in is also due to poor coaching.

Not giving up on Mullen yet, if we make a change at DC.
If not, he has to go too. Only coach on your list that interests me is Kiffin, and only if he doesn't bring back DJ Durkin. Ole Miss may be the only SEC team with a worse D than UF.

Mullen is a weird dude, I imagine that doesn't help his recruiting.

I am more of a risk taker when it comes to this kind of stuff. My position is always that when you don't believe the coach can get the job done, you move on. Doesn't matter what the talent pool looks like because ultimately there's always going to be few guarantees when it comes to hiring coaches. I'd rather give someone else a shot with hope they can get the job done then sit around waiting for the "right" guy to come along. You never know who is going to be the next great coach until you give them the chance.
That's not to say I've truly hit that point with Mullen yet, but it's getting very close.
