My thoughts after re-watching the game.

I tried to keep a running list of things I noticed after re-watching the game. This list went longer than I thought but our issues are much deeper when you really take the time to rewatch the game and go back and forth on plays. Also I didnt have much on the offense besides the OL and their pass pro. I think we all know we have to rotate more guys at WR and find some besides 1 who wants to make a damn play.
-First thing that stands out.. our run fits are absolutely terrible. I think it's partly guys not understanding the scheme.. but it also seems like our guys have zero trust in the other 10 guys on defense to do their job. Countless times they run Inside Zone and our ILB's fold back like they have the QB if he pulls it... 99% of the time they dont because we have an OLB or Secondary guy who is clearly responsible for the QB.. this is why so many inside runs are hitting front side or we dont touch the ball carrier till he's got 4 yards.
We dont have one DL besides 31 who can consistently defeat a single block and we damn sure dont have anyone inside that can demand a double team and let our LB's run free. But even when our ILB's are free they are so damn passive. They will take two steps up and let themselves be blocked. This is why I think Golding just sends them in A or B gap so much because they are trying to make them at least cause a stalemate at the LOS instead of being blocked at 4 yards. The more I really watch 8 & 10... they are terrible... missed tackles.. wrong fits... watch how many times they shuffle their feet gaining no ground and not defeating a block when teams are running it at our face. If we dont have guys behind them that arent any better than we are in trouble.
- Secondary... damn we are bad here. Same exact issues with not understanding scheme and not trusting the other 10 guys to do their job... when you have guys running wide open it's a freaking scheme thing. First TD.. Jobe is in man and Hellams thinks it's zone so he doesnt run with their TE. Second TD is the same exact thing. Battle puts a hand on the WR like he has help behind him and no one is there!! Also at some point can we please figure out and an ILB CANNOT run with a RB out of the backfield?? Kills us so many damn times, especially on 3rd down. We seem to do so much better in a cover 1 look where guys know who their man is and just try to stick with him.
-OL.. How did we not fix the protection issues in the first half. I'm not sure if 71 or 9 is the only calling which way the OL slides. Most of the time 9 should and if so then he's killing himself. We had no clue which way to slide the protection when they were blitzing and that resulted in countless free run blitzers.

This defense needed Barmore to return. Glad he is making money for that is why he came to Bama. We need one DL that can whip his blocker and disrupt the offense but we don't have that guy this year.
Bama is just plain ordinary on defense.(other than 31).

I've been saying it for three years. We've needed a new, simpler defensive scheme. Saban is to proud to change because it's his defensive system. It has too many reads and calls, takes too long to learn and hurts our ability to have depth ready to contribute.

Well we seemed to do that against OM. Maybe our coaches thought that we could execute the full scheme against A&M because they'd been so underwhelming on offense. But they underestimated Jimbo and the ability of their skill guys. idk

Somewhere along the line Bama decided everyone gets a trophy. Several players starting that would have played scout team years past.
The problem with 8 is he never played LB before he got to Bama. He has no instincts for the position, and I think he has a slow processor between his ears.
If this team was going to be rebuilding this year I much would have preferred to let 32 go ahead and get a jump on being the next great ILB this season. Same as I'd prefer to see one of the young WR's get their feet wet, and the younger more talented OL start to get game experience. If its a rebuild then rebuild the team, but this letting guys that have been around for a while start so everyone can have a trophy is hard to stomach.

you honestly don't believe this, do you? You really think that the coaches are purposely not playing certain young players because they don't want to hurt the feelings of older guys or something, as opposed to them just not being ready for playing time? Seems kind of insane.

You think Chris Owens is our best option at RT ? That seems kinda insane

I dont think it's this fully. Saban's base is Rip/Liz Match Cover 3. That base scheme isnt difficult to understand even for the common fan. I think it's more so of things Golding has added, especially pressure wise. It could also be that we dont have the guy in the secondary that can get the call and make sure everyone knows what defense we are actually in.

I think a few guys on defense have this issue.

Probably not but I also struggle to believe Saban would allow BoB to keep playing him if he thought one of the young guys was ready. I think it may be that the younger guys are close to what Owens is now but what happens if you throw a young guy in there and he gets abused like Owens did and he goes in the tank because of it?

We see the same few players make the same mistakes some of them for two seasons now and there never seems to be any consequences or a "next man up" opportunity.
With all these no.1 recruiting classes I'm simply not buying that. Seniority matters now. When Saban rebuilt Bama every position was up for grabs.

Is defensive scheme taught anymore at the high school level? I think a lot of high schools run the “mad hatter” and just let the guys play off pure athleticism. Our guys don’t do what they are supposed to do, they just play instinctively and clearly they don’t have much.

I think Owens's issue is the same at RT as it was at Center. He is our smartest lineman and knows all the assignments for every position, so he is the most reliable to not have a bust based on assignment.
But he isn't talented enough to consistently stonewall the assignment that he gets correct.
Knowing who to block, making the right reads, making the correct steps, and having all the proper fundamentals is great when doing all that leads to actually being able to block the man in front of you.
A&M's edge rusher was just beating him for speed all night long, and their interior pressure was keeping Bryce from being able to step up in the pocket when it happened.

It is at most of your playoff type teams in HS. I was a coach till this year and we were pretty dang complex in our scheme. A lot of times you see most HS teams run a version of Cover 1 or 2 Man.

That’s good to know. I guess these guys just don’t study enough

That's the definition of upside and rebuilding, and your quickest path back to your next elite team in my opinion.
Texas AM started 2 true fresh OL vs Bama and the two of them blocking will anderson all night didn't allow a single sack or pressure. I couldn't keep count of how many times owens got beat.
Meanwhile Bama signed the top TWO highest ranked tackles in the country last year. I guess TexasAM is doing a better job of player development ?

Owens got yanked too. He’ll improve or sit

It's hard to reconcile at times. I don't follow recruiting at all, so can't speak on how we've done at certain positions. But Gary and Brad talked about A&M starting 2 true freshmen on their OL, and they abused our front 7, while our OL was horrible in the first half. Is it coaching? Is it scheme? Are we getting a grade bump in recuiting rankings because we're Alabama? A combination of the 3?

I think they had a better plan for 31 and we played into that. He was doubled so many times because he would rush B gap because of the pressures we tried to send off the edge. There were very few chances for him to rush 1 on 1 off the edge. Every time we did get pressure their QB had someone running wide open. Two times off of the top of my head both were throws to a RB out of the backfield.
