Does he have a shot at being the career tackle leader at AU?
528: Freddie Smith, averaged more than 10 per game.
McClain finds the ball and attacks.
How much eligibility does he have left?

How much tackles does McLain have?

Highly doubtful. He’s at 207 right now.

And Freddie played significantly from his Freshman year on, I think.
MCClain hasn't been the starter since his freshman year..
MCClain is very very good but Fast Freddie was sideline to sideline...

Does he get another year or is he gone?
At 14-1 and 15-0, he could get to 400 fairly easily.

He’s a senior but not sure how the covid year plays in. I’m not sure another year would help him in the draft because he’s not getting any taller. He’s a great tackler he will make a squad in the NFL even if it’s just a special teams player. Not sure he can play inside on the next level, not sure he has the coverage skills to play outside either. Maybe make him a box safety on run downs. Probably at the highest a 3rd pick most likely 4th or 5th in my opinion.
Said all that to say he probably doesn’t return next year

He's a perfect college LB, but there are a ton of these types every year that would be considered tweaners.
As you say, his best bet is as a hybrid safety mainly to blitz or cover a slot WR. Steelers use a guy like this.

6' 220" is pretty damn stout

Lots of 6’ LBs in the NFL. I think his best attribute is that he can get sideline to sideline in ways that Deshaun Davis and KJ Britt couldn’t necessarily do. And I think he can cover TEs
That’s mainly why I like his chances better than those two.

The average NFL LB is a little over 6'2" and 244 lbs. So, at best, he's below average when it comes to size. Not sure where he ranks in terms of speed but he looks to be one of the faster LBers in the SEC. Average 40 time for OLB is 4.60. MLB is 4.76. I think he's certainly above average for a MLB in terms of speed. Not sure how well he would transition to the outside in the NFL.
I think his best shot is like someone else said. Maybe a safety walked down in the box for run support. A hybrid safety/linebacker. I think Darren Bates is a solid comparison as far as being maybe a little undersized but definitely fast and physical enough. And Darren has had a nice career in the pros. I certainly think Zakoby could as well.

That's odd. Don't recall in my post saying anything to discredit him.
His ability? All i said was he would make it better as a hybrid safety. That's not discrediting him.
Little sensitive are we?

quote:Seems to me speed is mostly the issue when moving up - HS, CFB, NFL - and that's why Deshaun Davis and KJ Britt struggled. They were certainly big enough in lbs. McClain would have to get bigger, but even if he didn't and could adjust to NFL speed I'd think he could carve out a special teams role for many years. IMO, great tackling is like rebounding in BB. Its something you have a knack for, and something you've got to want to do. Daren Bates and too many other AU players to mention are cashing great NFL paychecks by being able to tackle. Daren Bates was thought to be a step slow coming out of HS as a SS. He's still on an NFL roster for the 6th(?) year? He can tackle. McClain has good speed, and can also tackle.

look at Josh Bynes.
He doesn't have great speed as a LB but its good enough, along with his great tackling skills, he has hung around for years now.
The one thing with MCClain is he is still light for a LB. 219 I think? He's not going to be inside in the NFL, unless he can cover on 3rd downs.
The way the NFL uses its lighter LBs, he can be a hybrid safety.

Ok, let me clarify. Fast Freddie was faster sideline to sideline than McClain.
I watched both play in their careers.
It's not a knock on McClain. Just a comparison to another player that was not a big LB.
