It's kind of fun being atrocious at football

As I have gotten older, I can only laugh at the state of our program. When I was actually attending Carolina, and in my youth prior - these kinds of things made me LIVID. If the Gamecocks lost, it would basically ruin my entire week ahead. I couldn't watch any other CFB the rest of the weekend if we lost.
Now that I'm 33, I just don't care. In fact, it's almost fun being this bad. I mean eventually we will probably get back to a 6-6 or 7-5 type program, which I am okay with. We will never be a consistently great program, there are just too many obstacles.
It's refreshing having this frame of mind in regards to a bunch of 18-21 year olds playing a sport I have no control over.

What are the obstacles though? Seems like South Carolina could be as successful in football as they want to be. Not far from a lot of great talent, etc.

Everyone says this when their team loses. Natural emotional response

You just have Muschamp stank on you. It will go away after a few years. Almost like taking a shower after going to a dirty arse strip club.

When I was in college, I thought that 2012 SECCG was going to haunt me my entire life.
Of course, 2017 hurt but 2012 just get different. Probably age and perspective . Lol

Same, I used to get pissed when the hogs lost. Now I just get over it in a matter of minutes and move on about my day. I have pretty much become cumbersome. No reason to allow a sports to control your emotions like that. Hog fans have gone through a pretty rough time lately to say the least.

What are the obstacles though?
And in recruiting.

No pressure can be a good thing sometimes

The obstacles are the same as they are for almost everyone. Hiring a good coach and getting him to stay. I mean there is literally another team in their state that has built themselves into a regular contender without some great historical success. I would say if you were Nebraska or the Dakotas you would have some natural challenges but South Carolina you're within a few hours of plenty of talent. If you start winning they will start coming there.

Our obstacles are pretty unique.. with our in-state rival being a top program in the country with no signs of stopping any time soon, and we've always had to deal with Georgia right next door too.

My experience has been the older I got the less it bothered me. As a teenager and young adult I would get pissed when Georgia lost a game but now I'm at the point where whether they win or lose I still have to go to work Monday, the mortgage and utilities are still going to come due and my family and life are still going to need tending to.
Football is a fine distraction and great for entertainment but in terms of importance it's not very high on the list

I went to a SC game once when they were bad and was blown away by the huge fan support.

Primarily the manner in which our board members are appointed. Every BOT member at South Carolina has to be approved by the SC legislature. And our BOT has to have one member from each judicial circuit in the state (see below). In order to be approved by the legislature as a whole, you have to get support from the local legislators in the judicial circuit you wish to represent. Who do you think the legislators in those Upstate districts root for? Do you think they'd approve a trustee who was a strong representative for the university they despise? This ridiculous political involvement and geographic gerrymandering does not exist at Clemson, as they have a voting majority of permanent trustees who select their own replacements and there is no requirement that the trustees be from certain areas of SC.

I saw someone in front of me yesterday with a “Clemson Board of Visitors” license plate. It had the palmetto tree on the left. Wtf was that?

They're liaisons to the board. Essentially they report to the board to share concerns or positive feedback regarding all matters pertaining to the university.

When your team sucks and you don't have any expectations, college football can be really enjoyable. I learned this from 2014-2017.
Also from the years 1991-2013 when Florida lost it literally ruined my month. One year when we were playing like trash against Kentucky, I had to go take a walk around the block, barefoot.

There are more people in Metro Atlanta than the entire state of SC. It's a numbers game.

"Fun" wouldn't be the adjective I'd use, but there is something freeing about not having any great expectations at the start of the season. It gives us the ability to talk smack to anyone and not really have to back anything up.
It's good when you don't have to take yourself too seriously.

What I enjoy is those that don’t realize we know we suck and actively admit it. So when we talk smack in a joking manner they still insist on bringing up our history like we are clueless on it.
