We are six pages into this thread, and I could be mistaken, but I don't believe anybody from Arkansas has claimed the great Johnny Cash (probably the greatest). If I didn't misread, shame on all of you.

Pretty much every thing that is based on jazz owes New Orleans. Basically a huge amount of the roots of American music came from the region from New Orleans to the Mississippi Delta. It’s really amazing when you think about such a relatively small region that provided the genesis of so much of of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Of course. Whiskey Meyers(Texas) is probably the best southern rock style band making music right now. Red dirt country shares a lot in common with southern rock.

Blind Melon (Starkville) based much of their last (or somethign) album on New Orleans jazz - last one with Shannon still living, number two on Soup
