Chris Jackson was such a stud back in those days.

Bo Jackson or Hershel Walker
Walker does MMA. He still has a freakish physique now.
If Bo didn't get hurt who knows where he would be.

Derrick Henry as RB and stiff arming a DL is an impressive feat also

Yeah, because Herschel never excelled in any other sport and he definitely didn’t win a MMA fight at age 50. (sarcasm)

I know he didn't have the ball in his hands often, but I'm going to put in Derrick Thomas for discussion. His 27 sacks in 1988 at Alabama will never be matched, and he still holds the single game NFL sack record with 7. He also has the 2nd most NFL sacks in a game with 6.

Just imagine in the 80s Auburn had Chuck, Bo and Frank, arguably some of the best athletes ever in their respective sports, in school around the same time. Frank Thomas was also a letterman at Tight End as well for the tigers.

Todd Helton was a starting QB at Tenner before he got hurt and had a stellar MLB career.

Bo Jackson

period.

The discussion can commence for 2 thru whatever after Mr. Jackson.

Bo had the best outfielder’s arm I ever saw. He picked up one at the base of the wall in right center in Oakland one day and threw a frozen rope to nail a guy at home. He played FB for the Raiders but played baseball for KC. Oakland was great at that time, but the home crowd was 100% behind Bo. He didn’t disappoint.

Not factually incorrect, and Helton is a great athlete.

But he likely never starts at Tenner if their starting QB doesn't go down in the season opener against UCLA.

Career numbers:

41-75
484 yds
4 TD 3 INT

Dude's a HoF baseball player though.

Greatest ever athlete? While you can argue Walker or Bo, with good arguments the reality of it is you should look beyond football/basketball. A few names that should be on the shortlist:

Ryan Lochte
Abby Wambach
Dara Torres
Novlene Williams-Mills
Jeff Demps
Billy Cannon
Todd Helton
Grant Holloway

You win multi-year Olympic medals and or own world records you can be argued as greatest athletes.

Bo Jackson. But the answer far exceeds greatest in the SEC. Greatest period.

While a great athlete, he would fall pretty far down the list for the greatest period. Hell if we get out of just the SEC but asking the greatest athletes to have played football he would be top 5 but may not be best. You have to bring Jim Brown into the argument, but I would probably put Charlie Ward on the shortlist of college football athletes. Heisman Trophy winner and 1st round NBA draft pick with 10 year NBA career. Then again you also have Glen Davis on that list. But I would probably put Jim Thorpe as the greatest athlete to play football.

Jackie Robinson would be one of the tops athletes or Michael Phelps.

Bo was better at baseball than Herschel. But Herschel was more accomplished at football. Better than Bo at track. Also did MMA and winter Olympics.

The debate lives on . . .
