So, once again we are covering the subject of football fandom. A belief that either you are a graduate of the school and therefore the world's greatest fan or you didn't go to that particular school and genetically it becomes impossible to actually be a football fan otherwise.

Proof positive, once again, that a degree makes folks no smarter than the average CNN/FoxNews viewer.

Thinking ability is mostly a lost art.

WTF kinda a comparison is this? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.

One of the single most retarded responses ever offered by a football fan. And definitely one of the more retarded responses from a TU fan.

I don’t know. I guess I don’t get it. While growing up, I was a fan of a number of schools because I grew up in TX. Yes, I’m a longhorn, but growing up I cheered for A&M, UT, and pretty much any other TX team that played on TV. I guess that means I wasn’t a true fan then. I guess I don’t look down on people the same way you do. When I see someone wearing UT gear, I don’t care if they were a student or not.

This just isn't a 'thing,' at least not in Alabama. I guess I cant speak for LA and MS. I spent the first 23 years of my life in Alabama and can't think of a single example of this, someone changing teams because of perceived success of the football team.

I’d call those people dumbasses. The only schools I would rep are where my wife went to school (UTSA), where my best friend went to school (Colorado), and if I go to the Final Four or something and snag a shirt with all the schools on it.

Only reason I rep Colorado is because me and my friend hit up some of their games and he’s given me some gear too. Nobody pulls for CU or UTSA because they want to be a front runner.

My mom and her side of the family went to UT. I put all of my burnt orange shite away at my folks home.

Blow U has the most t shirt fans.

Every Indian in Sequoyah county has a Blow U cap and not one can tell you Blow U's record last season.

But they got meth

OHHHH The Irony! OU is fraught with this. Ex-in laws whole family ou fans and acted like they went there. This is super rich coming from land grabber. I will say, here in Tx, lot of no attendee UT latinos sportin the whorns but unsure if they're fans or if they just get gear at Goodwill. Anyone seen wearing Ag gear went to school there as no one who didn't would claim to be a fan.

This is old information, but it's still somewhat interesting, even if it's not necessarily surprising. Their methodology isn't exactly bulletproof, but it seems like a fair barometer for their argument.

quote:

What percentage of those who "Like" each team's biggest official athletics Facebook page also list themselves as having attended that university?

The largest "non-alumni" fanbases appear to belong to the traditional regional "powers", so to speak, except for Northwestern, which seems extremely out of place in this group.

quote:

The top 10 is a more eclectic group, starting with the *other* giant school in Texas.

I guess the Ags are right about part of this. Nobody wants to root for A&M except the students and alumni.

Just for argument's sake, some interesting rivalry comparisons.

The full list of P5 Sidewalkers.

Not really a ton of surprises here. Vandy being so low was somewhat interesting. You don't think of them having a ton of sidewalk fans, but they obviously have much higher academic standards than many schools as well, which could keep little Commodores from attending?

All in all, it's pretty much what you would expect. Schools with a traditionally dominant program in any of the major sports have a higher percentage of "non-alumni" fans. Also, based on the information they've gathered, it appears that "secondary" state school's alumni are more likely to publicize or proclaim their alma mater. Maybe it's a bit of a badge of honor for them to have gone against the grain rather than jumping on the bandwagon.

Because the closest they came to going to the school they root for is walking on the sidewalk on campus
