The SEC expands! What do we sacrifice for it?

The AD, Prez?, and the PTB will need input into the SEC structure. Pods or divisions. Divisions brings little to decide, since it doesn't impact our rivalries. Pods create the quandary, yet seem to be the reported direction per AL.com's sauces.

Personally and for the good of the rivalries, we should insist on Divisions. Pods mean we lose a rival, UGA or Bama. The only possible remedy is 9 games with the 9th being a permanent cross-pod rival.

Recent history and state bragging rights says keep Bama. Recruiting and history says keep UGA. If the end result is Pods and 8 games, do we keep the DSOR or Iron Bowl?

Keep DSOR = Upvote. Iron Bowl = Downvote.

Do pods + 1 permanant cross-pod opponent, rotate the rest.

So in a 9 game conf schedule, 4x4 pods- play 4 same opponents every year (3 pod mates + 1 cross pod permanant), rotate the other 5. Being that there's 11 other teams, you'd get through every SEC team every 2-3 years for at least 1 of a home and home.

Basically we give up OM, MSU, Arky, aTm and LSU as every-year opponents so that we don't go 12 years between former east teams or whatever's been the case.

Make sure we're either in a pod with Bama or UGA, and make the other permanent.

Supports the TSIO as well. The biggest sacrifice in my mind is playing LSU every year which I enjoy. The rest of the west has no place sucking up opportunities to play east teams, IMO.

Or, and it would totally suck, you could make a pod of Auburn, Bama, Tenn, and UGA. That way you preserve IB, DSOR, and TSIO.

You also keep the annual UGA/UT game, and you make Bama/UGA's schedule a bit tougher each year by them having to play each other.

Not sure if UGA/UF would go for that since it would mean losing the cocktail party.

Just spitballing.

Edited to move UT into our pod. Not all modests are created equal of course (or premiums for that matter)

Pod 1
Auburn (UGA)
Alabama (OU)
Tenn (SCAR)
Miss State (OM)

Pod 2
UGA (Aub)
Florida (LSU)
Vandy (Modest opponent)
SCAR (Tennessee)

Pod 3
UT (aTm)
OU (Bama)
Mizzou (Modest opponent)
Arkansas (Modest opponent)

Pod 4
LSU (Florida)
aTm (Texas)
Ole Miss (MSU)
Kentucky (Modest opponent)

Lot of SEC rivalries lost if we go the pods route which would be unacceptable.

Well it's going the POD route so we are going to have to get used to it. I think I've read the SEC doesn't like the Division idea anymore with 16 teams and maybe more teams on the way....

Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Missouri are in the SOUTHEASTERN conference... the idea of tradition is long gone. That should include some rivalries.

And don't forget we added Arkansas and SCar 30 years ago, so it has changed just about every 10 years now since 91.

Rivalries are lost every time there is expansion.

I get you’re going to lose some. But there’s some you can’t lose.

Auburn/UGA for example would be one on the chopping block depending on how the pod system is set up.

Been playing too long not to continue it.

Auburn/LSU however. A little more expendable even though I would personally hate not to play them every year

I agree that Pod+1 solves the rivalry situation and may (should) be the compromise. In this scenario, I have a hunch that Bama doesn't end up with Texas (my +1 for them), but Kentucky, since 'Tucky seems be added to their schedule every time SEC expands. Go figger.

I feel like you can minimize the damage with divisions.

West
LSU
Texas
Oklahoma
A&M
Arkansas
Mizzou
Ole Miss
MSU

East
Auburn
Bama
UGA
UF
UT
UK
Vandy
SCAR

7 games against your division. 2 rotating. No permanent. Obviously LSU would get hurt the most not playing Florida/Auburn/Bama every year. But I also feel they have some natural rivalries in that division.

I also just hate the pod system in terms of determining a winner. Scheduling would vary widely which leads to less comparison between the teams.

I don’t think I’ve paid much attention but what’s the plan for the conference championship with the pod system? How is that determined?

I’m willing to sacrifice old Lanier for almost anything

I will say the POD idea doesn't sound college football-like does it?

I can handle divisions..but anything stranger gives me a headache...lol.

With division's I still have a vested interest in how 1/2 the SEC does. So I'll more intently follow their schedule and games. And with a pod it's more how clean they'll get my dishes.

No thanks. I’d rather give up 1 completely and rotate all other opponents.

It’s stupid as hell that we have to play UGA every year while Alabama gets downtrodden Tennessee.

We really need to keep it at 2 divisions. Let’s grab 2 more relevant teams at this point, and name one division “SEC Proper” with the currently joined charter schools, and name the other division “expansion trash”.
