2020 was a throwaway season and we all know it. Fact of the matter is, OP is right. College football as we knew it is over. NIL, mega conferences, etc. There won't be a such thing as marquee OOC matchup anymore. We will all just be in one of two conferences like the fricking NFL.
Thanks for proving my point.
And teams being from different conferences is the only thing that gets you excited for a game? Who cares?
Every time there are changes to this sport, someone inevitably says "this is the end!" Fast forward a decade or two, and those same individuals are still watching and cheering for their team.
You and the OP will be no different.

I will still watch and cheer for my team, but over the last several years I seem to care less each year, kind of like the players.
Once they started opting out for bowl games and then the entire season in 2020, it just seems to me that these kids really don't care about college athletics and many of them will tell you as such. They are just looking for a ticket to the NFL, and I absolutely do not care about the NFL.

OP is spot on. This is something else now.

Right - and the last year that China really mattered was in 1644 AD, when the Ming Dynasty ended. Of course, their reign lasted much longer than the one year that LSU enjoyed...

I'd say our run is still going on, albiet the shite show last year. We still managed by the skin of our teeth to not have a losing season. Thank you Ole Miss for being shittier at defense than LSU last year. 21 years and counting.

I read a post on Reddit that made a really good point about the current landscape of college football. College football in the '60s to early '80s was actually way worse than it is now. Teams had unlimited scholarships and only blue bloods like Notre Dame, Bama, OU, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Nebraska were ever allowed to play on TV. Schools that came out of nowhere to have really good seasons in recent years like Indiana, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Northwestern would have been impossible during that time period.

Weird. If only we could identify a logical explanation for why a Florida fan (typically a pretty rabid fanbase) would care less about football the last decade or so. Hmmmmm.

I look forward to the
"college football is the only real sport"
when Auburn is good again.

We sucked last year...
But Fla threw a shoe!
So there’s that...

You claiming a time period when teams could not win their division and still play for a title was real football?
The irrelevance of divisional play is pretty much evident in all major sports.
The Bucs just won a SB without winning their Div. MLB has a a handful of wild card champs alongside the NFL. And, I don't think the NBA even gives a shite about divisions anymore.
The CFPs didn't really change that from the BCS. If anything, it doubled down on the subjective nature of selecting the best teams. Evident in Bama's 2017 CFP spot and NC as a divisional co-champ who didn't play in the CCG. All that said, in both years in question, the BCS and CFP committee got it right.
