Go-time: Georgia has everything it needs to win a national title

Kirby Smart has built the best roster in his conference, and possibly the country. Only Alabama and Clemson can match what the Bulldogs can roll out on Saturdays. Smart knows it and his players know it. The pressure has been building year to year and is cranked beyond the boiling point.



It's not because Georgia last won a national title in 1980. No, the frustration began four years ago, when Tua Tagovailoa's pass on second-and-26 sunk the Bulldogs' championship dreams. Smart went to work on the recruiting trail to close the gap with Alabama, and his plan has worked (UGA had 2020's most talented roster, per the 247Sports Team Talent Composite). Smart built a winner on paper and Georgia fans need — no, require — a return to the top.

“We are about to have weapons all over the field," Gilbert told Dawgs247.

No more quarterback controversies. No concerns with depth. No more excuses.

Georgia's last five recruiting classes all ranked in the top 4 nationally, including two No. 1 classes, according to the 247Sports Composite. A roster comprised of talent that ranked No. 2 nationally on average, along with the addition of three former 5-star prospects in the transfer portal (Gilbert, Kendrick and USC quarterback JT Daniels) in the last year, should reach the playoff. Anything less will be a disappointment for Georgia's fans, coaches and players.

That's the reality for the Bulldogs. The success off the field can be celebrated. Fans can and should enjoy the victories in recruiting, yes, but 2021 is the year to see results on the field.

It's time to beat Alabama. It's time to lift a couple of trophies. It's time to win a national championship.
