Disagree if a team has good pitching we are screwed...out guys are terrible against quality arms
We ran into elite arms, the nations best, every weekend in the SEC. My point is we won't see those arms in a regional. Just look at the Kentucky game. They are a NCAA tournament team that we feasted on. We won't see another SEC elite pitcher until the Supers or CWS and it's anyone s game at that point.

from the SEC weekly baseball release ...
more from the release about Carolina's opponent and the rare air they find themselves for their historically unaccomplished baseball program.

South Carolina ... is making its league record 24th consecutive SEC Tournament appearance.
South Carolina has won 11 of the last 13 series over Tennessee, including an eight-series win streak from 2007-14.
The Gamecocks have swept the Volunteers in seven of the last 10 series. UT won the last series in Knoxville in 2019 but has not won a series in Columbia since 2006.
During that span, the Gamecocks have won the last six series at home, including four sweeps.
In fact, Tennessee has only two series wins at South Carolina since it joined the league in 1992 (1994 & 2006).

Tennessee has matched its high in a 30-game conference schedule with 18 SEC victories
and is in the hunt to win its first SEC title since 1995.
The Volunteers have won all four road series, something they had not done since 2001. They have never gone 5-0 in road series.
A series victory would give them their most series victories in a season with eight and give them
at least 20 league victories for the first time since the 1995 team went 22-8.
Tennessee is making back-to-back SEC Tournament appearances since making three straight from
2014-16.

Can't tell if this makes me feel better or worse.

So we gave Tennessee a good fight and we could have won so now here is my question
Do we go all out and try to win 3 in the SEC tournament to possibly Host OR
SIT our starting arms and throw the midweek guys and be fresh for the regional because we already know we're in.
I'm going with option 2

That’s what Ray did. Worked for him.

Our starters need a break. Winning the SEC tournament is not as important as the Regional.

quote:nope - not in most years and certainly not this year. resting the weekend/main arms for NCAAs is imperative if Kingston's serious about trying to win a regional to roll the dice in a Super for Omaha.
Winning the SEC tournament is not as important as the Regional.
speaking of regionals - I was thinking of dropping this truth on the SECr to piss a few folks off but will just leave it here.
quote:
Gamecocks more deserving of Regional host than Florida. the body of work doesn't lie.
start with Carolina's regular season sweep over the Gators.
RPI - favors USC 14/19
SOS - favors USC 2/21
Q1 Wins - favors USC 11/9
Q4 losses - favors USC 1/2
Road Wins - favors USC 10/7
Neutral Site - favors USC 1/0
Gators drew Auburn (10-20) & Texas AM (9-21) from the West while Carolina played better teams LSU (13-17) & State (20-10). Gators were 5-1 while USC was 1-5 in those games. both played Ole Miss & Arkansas and each won 1 of the 6.
Gamecocks had a better record vs the East than Florida.
UF finished with 17 SEC wins - USC 16.
Carolina's West draw was the reason why.
Non-Conference SOS & RPI also favors the Gamecocks 33/64 & 115/151.
the 'popularity contest' media polls are the only place that Florida ranks higher than Carolina. #9 to #21 heading into final weekend and UF finished the regular season with 2 more wins & 1 less loss than the Gamecocks overall.
make no mistake - the SEC will get 6 of 16 regional sites. Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt will each host. 6th spot comes down to Florida & Carolina and the power brokers involved in choosing will cater to Florida - even though the numbers favor Carolina.
...so congratulations Florida on being awarded a Regional host by the NCAA. fully expect the NCAA & Birmingham to make sure your recent big investment in a new stadium gets a payoff.

While I agree with that sentiment there's really no reason why we couldn't or shouldn't try for both.
LSU has won 6 since 2000 with 2 of those teams going on to win the national championship while a 3rd was national runner-up.
Vanderbilt also won both in 2019.

Neither LSU nor Vandy had to go through a SEC season like we just did. To Win the SEC tournament we would have to use every arm and after this season our starters desperately need a break. The SEC tournament may have more talent than the CWS. I only care about the Regional so maybe it's just me.

I care about both. And I doubt that either of us are knowledgeable enough to compare our 2021 season with the 6 LSU seasons from the past 20 years.

Both would be nice but the reality is using our strength for the SEC tournament would doom us for the NCAA tournament. Because of Covid and the shorten MLB draft I can assure you that, while the SEC has always been talented, no season has matched the talent this year.
To be honest no one remembers the SEC tournament champion but they do remember the CWS Champion.

so the bullshite among the media polls started in full force today to paint USC as not worthy of a host.
the phaggits at D1 (this is a real who's who among Gamecock haters) dropped Carolina from the T25 from being ranked 21 after 2 losses to #4 UTK. UTK retained their 4 ranking after losing 1 game to USC. Gamecocks were 2-2 on the week.
meanwhile Gonzaga also went 2-2 on their week and rose in the D1 rankings from 17 to 14. Gonzaga is 3-4 vs T25 teams this season.
NCSU jumped up 7 spots after a 2-1 record last week landing at #16. NCSU doesn't have a win over #1 Arkansas or #4 Tennessee anywhere in its resume - or a sweep over #13 Florida - 3 spots ahead of the wolfpack in D1's new rankings.
Arizona State jumped up 4 spots from 25 to 21 after a 2-1 record last week. ASU's season record is 32-17 with a RPI of 31.
both unranked UMiami & unranked Nebraska entered the T25 at 24 and 20. Canes lost 1 game last week and Neb apparently established themselves worthy after winning a series at Michigan. Nebraska is 0-0 vs T25 this season.
and then there are the Gators - who went 0-3 last week and dropped from 9 to 13 by getting swept at #1 Arkansas. Florida is 6-12 vs T25 teams this season Gamecocks are 7-14. Florida's RPI is also 5 spots lower than USC's.
as you can see - anything that can be done will be done to negate Carolina's excellent RPI - that stands at 14th best in baseball.

What means more? Winning a regional and getting to the supers or winning your conference tournament. I remember our NCAA regional wins more than any of our sec tournament wins. The NCAA tournament just means more and should be our 1st and only concern.

Do we deserve to host imo yes but I doubt we will. I see us being the #2 seed in the East Carolina regional and if I was East Carolina I would be pissed. I wouldn't want Carolina in my regional at all. Wouldn't be the first time we won at their place during the tournament.

Maybe it's because we've won so many regionals but I'd rather win the SEC-T and lose in the regionals than embarrass ourselves in the SEC-T and then go 0-2 in the Supers.
And yes, I know winning the regional is necessary to go to Omaha and yes I'd choose a CWS appearance and go 0-2 in Omaha every day over winning the SEC-T.

So you would rather win a conference tournament then be one of the final 16 teams playing even if you go 0-2? That absolutely makes no sense. It's a damn good thing Ray Tanner didn't think that way because I would have Jewelry Warehouse shirts that say Sec tournament winner instead of Back to Back National Champions.

This is true but when we do face pitchers that are not on the Elite status ( see Kentucky) we can crank it out. I doubt we see any round 1 draft picks in the regional and anything can happen in the Supers.
