Does anyone miss the early 2000s style of football?

The insane amount of offense is kind of annoying to me. I miss the 2004 Auburn/2008 Bama type of football where it was more about running the ball and stopping the run.

I do, badly. It's just not the same game, and it probably never will be.

Yes. Even after the season we had last year. I’m old enough to remember when scoring 40-plus points meant a definitive blowout just about every time and not a shootout.
Still, I would be fine with the style if the game hadn’t become so corporatized and the game now overstepping its importance to society.

I agree. IMO early 2000s SEC was the most entertaining

I blame Saban. Teams were forced to find a way to beat his unbeatable defenses.

I just miss the days of being super excited when a team would score and go up 16-10 in the fourth quarter and it would probably close out the game. Now scoring is just expected and it’s not the same reaction.

I do too. I miss the days of LSU Bama knocking the shite out of each other. It was just more exciting and fun to me. Big plays were so rare and important. It was the greatest time in football imo.

I’ll always remember 2005 LSU vs Bama. Although LSU won, it was a super physical game. LSU, Bama, and Auburn were always similar.
LSU and Bama always strategically put a bye before the games to prepare for how physical it would be.

The 2011 regular season game was the peak. Two defenses so good they basically canceled each other out NFL ready monsters all over the field.

I miss the 60's and 70's.
Real football without bullshite penalties. QBs were just another player.

Everyone talks about 2019 LSU and 2020 Bama, but I still think those 2011 teams were special in their own right

Bama in the second half burning time..... Saints going bland in the second half of a game to burn time...
I think a team that emphasizes defense and runs a spread option pass offense like coastal Carolina can manage a game well enough to win games against comparable talent.
Bama could do it if they wanted to... but why change the flavor of the college football deal for shets and gigs? Especially when your entire system churns out 5 first rounders a year.
I guess Nick can panic if they only have 2-3 and shift everyone back to the triple option

I think I prefer a little past the early 2000s, when you could still build a suffocating defense, but offenses were really starting to become explosive. I haven't seen a truly suffocating defense in the SEC since 2011 LSU/Alabama (well, 2012 Alabama was really good, too).
In 2009, the 14–0 Alabama defense had three TDs scored against it in three out of 14 games. The 2019 15–0 LSU squad had three TD scored in seven of 15, and that was quite possibly the most oppressive CFB team we've ever seen.
The most scored against that Bama team was in the opening game against a Virginia Tech team that would finish #10, and they only scored 24 points. Five teams scored 24 or more against the 13–0 2020 Bama team, two of those teams scoring in the upper 40s.
I can't help but feel like sooner or later, football fans are going to get tired of half of the team being basically irrelevant. Even if you're growing up on this kind of football, it's getting old watching one of the few key defensive players getting ejected on an unavoidable and non-malicious helmet to helmet. Not to mention, who wants to coach defense when there's more or less no way to do the job right, and you're essentially there just to be a scapegoat to get fired in a year or two?

Defensively, yes. Offenses we're that good.

I miss the old days before the forward pass. This new forward pass has ruined the game

I don't want to put a date on myself, but I can remember when you could tackle the QB or even hit a receiver really hard.

1996-2010 was the golden age of SEC football
