Steele made his money with the average teams in the SEC. Against the better teams, AU had to lean on the Offense to win. Steele was overrated , even among Auburn circles.

That has more to do with the current nature of college football. Great offense beats great defense these days.

like the hire and have always been impressed with Mason. He had a Couple good years at Vandy despite having an impossible job and was lights out at Stanford.
Great hire.
The players will run through a brick wall for him and he can flat out coach.
I might even expect a bump in recruiting defensively for 2023 class.

Seems like a solid hire to me

Sounds like YellaFella and his group are losing their sideline passes at the barn.
A solid hire if Mason gets the gig.

That was the problem, he never adjusted. He made average QBs look good and good QBs look great. He gave up many 3rd and long First Downs due to his stubbornness.Loved to blitz.

The offense is why Gus was hired.
As I recall Kevin did alright against Bama and Georgia in 2017 and Bama again in 2019 and I still recall that 3-1-7 hybrid look that Steele broke out against LSU in BR in 2019. Burrows was struggling with his keys all night. Obviously, LSU had even less success with Kevin's defense this season. He has a distinct imagination against spread attacks and keeps it simple enough to communicate and execute. No easy feat, I was impressed anyway.

I think Mason would be a good hire. Better than Bobo as the OC for sure

Great hire. Too bad we didn’t get him to replace Grantham.

Auburn is so fricking terrible at everything they do

Steele was a good DC, though probably a tad overrated. He benefitted greatly from Muschamp's effect. Like everyone else though, he was dependent upon his personnel.
Mason is probably a good hire, but it is frankly unknown now. The world is completely different than when he was last a DC; but it's not like he was out of college football, he was a HC in the SEC. He's certainly worth a try.

Mason is a good hire but I think Steele is a better DC.
Ya gotta expect some drop off from the normal solid D.

Compared to this year? Or Steele with Muschamp recruits?

Steele had the personnel to slow those elite offenses, but he never changed schemes. He was very predictable and the OCs knew what he was going to do. The SEC has become a QB league and those teams with good QBs dominate the league. The problem has been there haven't been many good QBs, so DCs like Steele have looked good 70% of the time. He just never adjusted the other 30 %.

We just lined up and ran it between the tackles 46 times.
