1998 is closer to 1980 than it is to the present day

Not bad...you beat FSU's 3rd string freshman QB that was one year removed from running the wishbone in high school.

He was a redshirt sophomore.

Same thing. Bottom line is, he wouldn't have been playing if there hadn't been 2 QBs ahead of him that went down. Would Tennessee have won against Weinkie? Who knows...however, it was only a one score game with Outzen. FSU with Weinkie probably would have stolen Tennessee's lunch money.

How can a man that pushed all the right buttons for a few years end up pushing all the wrong ones for the last 15?

My personal opinion is that Fulmer suffered most by Spurrier going to the NFL.

The SEC was literally in Fulmer's stranglehold and he let it go.

Possibly. Do we get Jamal Lewis back for the game? Obviously we didn’t need him against UGA, Henry and Stephens were more than enough that afternoon, but against a fully healthy FSU we’d probably need him.

Ohio State was the best team in the country that year but lost to a Saban coached Michigan State team at home that cost them a shot at the National title. Tennessee has the GOAT to thank for snapping their national championship drought.

He was HC coach at UT for 16 years. Eight of those he had David Cutcliffe as his OC and the other eight he did not.

With Cutcliffe: 81-19
Without him: 64-33

Now it’s not as simple as just having Cut or not, but that’s the glaring difference in Fulmer’s career. Other things that attributed to his downfall were the resignation of Strength and Conditioning coach John Stuckey, really poor assistant coach hires, lackadaisical recruiting, and as OE pointed out, Spurrier leaving UF.

No. Outzen was playing QB. FSU was actually favored by nearly a TD

Thanks, I wonder which game I am thinking about?

From top to bottom, absolutely. But counting on John Cooper to win a big game was always a dangerous proposition.

The Sugar Bowl that they played against UGA in Richt’s second season.

Saban and LSU later took it all away in 2001. They never recovered. I remember all of the UT fans brought roses to the game because they were so confident a 4 loss LSU team didn’t stand a chance and this was just a formality before the NC game.

This is an exaggeration. Too many young hot coaches were arriving in the SEC as Spurrier was getting ready to depart. Nick Saban arrived at LSU in 2000 and Mark Richt arrived at Georgia in 2001. Plus you had the ultimate arrival of Urban Meyer at Florida in 2005. There was very little margin for error and Fulmer herp derped after the '01 season. 2004 was his last truly solid team.

I was at that game. We had absolutely NOTHING to cheer about. 22-3 doesn't sound bad, but it felt a whole lot worse.
