Somebody tell me what went wrong with him. I was very excited about him when he first signed. I thought he would be a road grader at OG. Once it was clear he wasn’t going to break into the two-deep at OL and they decided to give them a shot at DL, I thought he would be successful there as well. He’s a big, athletic dude. What happened?

Half of your high recruits pan out.
About 20% of your lower recruits pan out.

There was a minute in his recruitment where Netori was a fringe 5 star (maybe had a great camp or something) and then his ratings started to fall like a rock.

I was hopeful because at some point... someone thought he was an elite prospect at DL. But more information typically improves the recruiting guesses.

By all accounts, he is a great guy and great teammate. Should be successful going forward. The leap from high school to college is vast. Coach Donnan says he knows most everything that he needs to know about a kid by the 3rd practice.

Thanks for the response...

But, why did his stock fall like a rock? I remember Justin Shafer came from the same high school and he was lower rated then Johnson, but I remember hearing he had a higher ceiling because of better fundamentals.

So what was it with Johnson, couldn’t grasp the playbook, bad fundamentals, no work ethic, etc.?

He battled high blood pressure. He never got back to that same level of athletism he had coming out of high school.

I'm pretty sure I heard it was lots of personal stuff. He had a kid and there may have something regarding his parents. I'm hoping he can figure it all out and get back on the field somewhere else.

I dont know the exact timing.
He was one of the highest rated recruits after his sophomore year or his junior year. I dont remember which.

But once the recruiting services gave him a closer look, they didn't like what they saw in terms of elite.

He still finished in the composite as the 87th best recruit in the country. 247 had dropped him out of their top 100.
I'm not sure if the drop had anything to do with his position. He may have been rated higher as a DL recruit as a sophomore or junior. But film of his work as an OG may have been the reason for the drop with his athleticism still keeping him as a high 4 star.

You'd think they'd learn this is a net negative in HS/College. Inexplicably, teenage fatherhood is lifted up as a virtue in some subcultures.

For some reason I kept thinking it was diabetes. You are probably right, though. My memory is not as good as it once was. Either way, neither is anything you want to fool with. I hope he does well wherever he ends up.

This to put it mildly.

His older brother committed suicide when he was a freshman. He does not have a relationship with his father, and then lost the man who first filled that void to cancer last January.

Netori problems

ETA
That story goes on to say that when he was in texas at boarding school he was playing for Deion Sanders and stayed with him. I suspect he might end up at Jackson State with Sanders again.

Wow.Thats a lot to put on a young man's shoulders.

Not easy to play or get better with all those issues hanging over you.

Hopefully clears is head and puts those issues behind an and gets a new start with Deion.

Absolutely. And a lot of that was going on while he was still in high school. It would cripple most people. Me for one.

That all makes sense, gives some explanation other than he just lost his athleticism. Hope he finds some stability and security.

Absolutely.

So, when he was in High School his brother committed suicide, his dad went to prison, his grandfather died of cancer....then when he got to Georgia he had High Blood pressure and/or Diabetes. That's a lot for a kid not even 22 yet.

Probably why Donnan has been unemployed for 20 years.

Also known as retirement?

I'm looking forward to the day that I become unemployed for 20 years.

Enough about me. Donnan has a good eye for talent.

To be fair, Donnan was the one talking up Dwan Mathis as QB, right? I agree that he's often got good eye, but he's far from perfect also. If he feels like he knows what he needs to after three practices, my guess is he's basing things on current ceiling, which is dangerously short sighted.

Correct. He ID'd Cager the previous summer as well.

His comments werent specific to Netori.
They were specific to the first days that recruits practice (december, spring, fall). For some reason, people are very defensive on Netori. I remember when Johnsons ratings were dropping. It was the time when we dawg fans complained about the Bama bumps. So maybe he dropped suddenly because he committed to Georgia.

Ever wonder why Donnan never got another coaching job?

Ok. Good eye for talent, mediocre coach, and bad eye for assistant coaches.
