In what context? Deciding a champion. They weren’t speaking about non playoff postseason games that involve opt outs.
True. So you are advocating an overhaul of the system just to fix opt outs? You would be happy with the system as is if we could find another way to stop opt outs?

Of course a lot of the top 64 didn't sit out...many were involved in the CFB playoffs.
I do agree here.
I just counted and came up with 18 of the top 64 players played for Playoff teams....assuming I didn't miss any.

And how many played on teams that weren't bowl eligible? I knos Kinlaw for SC was one of em
Kinlaw would be one. I started to count, but lost interest pretty quickly because I remembered how many bowls were out there now.

Cfb has always had the worst post season. The players finally acknowledged it. Do you want it fixed or not?

The question is exactly this simple.

I know Derrick Brown played in his bowl.
Man,talk about the one who got away.He played all four years and his arguably the best DL in AU history

If we can establish a Dlinemen with Derrick Brown potential, 2021 is going to special.

Looks like Jordan Davis is leaning in the direction of coming back.
I'd say thats a pretty good start.

That's an opinion and obviously you are fine with having one. My opinion is colored by my childhood memories of sitting with my brothers and dad and watching the New Years Bowl games. I love watching Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC, Ohio State, Michigan and the SEC teams battle it out. I have great memories of those and was very excited about watching those games....so my opinion, obviously is different from yours.

Not really. In my generation you were considered a quitter to stop plying before the season was over. I get what they do it, but it doesn't change that they are quitting....for whatever their reason is.

Can you guarantee me that your solution is going to fix it?
I'm sure there are plenty of ways the problem could be fixed without monkeying around with the entire system.
You are going to get bad match ups in many of the games. So, we have a choice. We can either watch the better players play in poor match ups, or we can have good match ups but miss some players.

That’s great for you, but they were still meaningless unless you played for one of the few teams vying for the title. Players didn’t acknowledge that back then. They do now. Do you want it fixed or not?

Considering there has yet to be an opt put for a playoff team, sure.

Maybe meaningless. But people by the tons still talked about them and watched them.
quote:Not for 4 teams. But once the players see that the games for the lower teams truly are nonconsequential the players will begin to opt out.

You seem hesitant to address that the vast majority of the games in the semis are blow outs. How do you think the players and the fans are going to react when they lose closely matched games from the Sugar, Orange and the other NY6 games for blow outs?
It will be a horrible tradeoff for the fans.
You also never addressed this:
You would be happy with the system as is if we could find another way to stop opt outs?

I played in Bowls that were considered meaningless by people now, but none of us thought they were meaningless. We didn’t have the intensity of SEC games, but they were football and going on the trips was a reward for a hard season. The $$ and swag were big deals too. In fact, when we were unlikely to win the SEC (this was before the championship game) , our goal was to win out to get in a better Bowl. People who never played are making assumptions based on their own bias and emotion. This is not even up for debate, so just stop already.

Safe to assume a bowl is meaningful for many players now and then, but if championships matter, a bowl for a 7-4 team is not quite as meaningful as a playoff game or a game with playoff implications.

I didn't play college football but I did play from the age of 8 until I graduated high school and all of the people I played with played because we enjoyed the game...most of us played sandlot football every chance we got just to play the game....most of the kids at UGA and any school ain't going to the NFL and most play simply because they enjoy the game and the brotherhood of being on a team....but its difficult from a fan's perspective to simply enjoy the game for it merely being a game...we are fanatics and winning is all that matters...even if that means winning only a couple of games a year when your team has no business doing so....
All of that being said I cant fault anyone with the potential of making it to the NFL opting out of a bowl...and, at the basic level, it opens opportunity for a player who wouldn't get as much PT to get more....but it sucks from a fanatics POV....
On this note though how delusional are college football players???? I was completely unaware of the number who seriously think they are going to the NFL until Last Chance U came out and almost ALL of those dudes seriously think they have a shot when most of them can't keep their shite together long enough to play at a P5/G5 program for 3 years. They may have the talent but making a living in the NFL is about a lot more than talent....

The stakes aren't as high but the love of the game is the same....the vast majority of CFB players have no chance of earning a living playing football, although many are apparently delusional enough to think they will. At the end of the day 2 a days in August and practicing in October so you can play on Saturday even when your team has already been eliminated from anything meaningful has to be about loving to play the game...and a bowl game is one more of those for players who simply love playing football....because the grind of earning the right to get a chance to play can't be about anything more than simply enjoying playing the game except for the 1% who actually have a legitimate shot at the NFL....the grind of a football season is not easy.

I’m old enough that I have no idea what this generation of kids think. Maybe it’s cool to be able to say, “hey man, I opted out to prepare for my pro day.” Who knows.
I did not play ball beyond high school. I wasn’t big enough to take the hits. I did, however, run sponsored/major club level until I was in my late 40’s. I ran because I loved the competition. Even when I couldn’t outright win races, I ran. Was it discouraging to line up next to Kenyans or guys who had smoked me for years? Sure, but I was still there to compete. I don’t get quitting on your teammates. I think it’s a shitty, selfish thing to do.

I lean your direction.
I sympathize with players. But call a spade a spade.
It is quitting the team (brothers and coaches).
The players who quit need to be more like Barkley and speak truth. "Yeah, I quit my team. I'm not a role model. Did you see the first contract that I got?"
Players need to wear their decisions on the outside. If they are sensitive to being called a quitter, maybe they should second guess what choices they want to wear.
There are too many nutlicking fans too worried about sensitive truths.
There are probably too many fans incapable of being honest with themselves that they would stand by their team if in the same position. Most people dont come from money and would step over a family member to get it at 21-22 years old.

The reality of agents.
Think Jerry McGuire.
Always be closing. Get the signature on paper and in writing.
If it is just a firm handshake, the agent isnt doing his job (nevermind the fact that the agent's job is to sign the athlete and be concerned about interests after that fact and not before it).
Agents have no incentive to wait. None. Because if they wait, they are giving another agent an opportunity to shark the client.
Parents and kids evidently haven't seen Jerry McGuire. Lol.
There is no solution that I am aware of to the agent problem other than to inform kids at 17 and 18 years old what an "agent" means and why they do/say what they do/say.
Then again, how many 19 year olds wouldn't step over their brothers for money?
