Sources: Auburn is narrowing in on hiring Boise State's Bryan Harsin as its next head coach. A deal is expected soon.

Thoughts on this? Obviously way better for them than hiring Steele, but nothing overly impressive to me.

Unimpressive hire. Hopefully he sucks and derails their program more.

Probably a good coach but you have to recruit your arse off to win around here... probably can't

Reiterating the comment I made on tRant, this feels like when Tennessee hired Butch. He ain't from round here, he has limited P-5 experience, and his HC experience involves taking over winning G-5 programs and doing worse than his predecessor.

My thoughts are Boise is the premier job in their league. It's like basketball coaches winning at VCU and Dayton. And they've been good in the league, but not dominant, and they haven't been anything on the national scene.
I'm sure they could have done worse, but this is a major meh hire.

He might be a solid coach. It depends on who he build the staff around and is he willing to change his offensive scheme to fit sec?

Very good comparison

I mean it's probably as good as they could have done, and it's definitely not a disaster.....but it definitely wouldn't excite me as an Auburn person.

He didn’t do much while at Texas but has been a consistent winner at Boise . Sure he is a good coach but he will be going up against elite recruiters in this league ... he better get some help

Worth $21M to fire Gus in order to hire Harsin?

Very meh... Not a whole lot of experience. Not really dominating at Boise either.

i would not call it a home run hire but I would call it a good hire. Pat Dye came from Wyoming and was successful.

Better than Kevin Steele. But doesn’t scare me at all.
Probably similar results to Gus...8-4ish every season

ETA: Harsin's buyout is $8.4M, according to the USA Today salary database. Add that to the $12M buyout to fire Gus. That's $30M to switch, plus the costs of any related staff changes.

Yea, I'm definitely not gonna laugh at it. I remember Gus in 2013.

This is marriage of convenience as Auburn is in desperate need of a respectable coach after being turned down by everyone and Harsin desperately wants out the of the MWC for the way they manage things. If he ever gets a legit Pac-12 offer he is on the first thing smoking back to the Northwest if he last that long. Boise State is trying to move to the AAC as a football only school and a lot of that has to do with Harsin's discontent with the MWC but it looks like they couldn't move fast enough.

I didn't laugh at Gus when they hired him. I knew he was the brains behind Auburn's run in 2010 and knew his offense would give us problems. We evolved and he did not. On the surface this feels like a good hire for them. Not a home run, but definitely better than Bill Clark or Kevin Steele.
