LSU Athletics Finances Question

This is not a shite post. I know that a few years ago it was discussed and quite frankly many were throwing crap at LSU about your poor financial situation. Has that improved?
I ask because it appears to have improved some just based on the fact that Pelini was given a fully guaranteed 3 year contract worth something like $4.5 million (that number is probably slightly off).
I’m not sure what other costs would be associated with letting the other coaches go but I’m assuming a few million?
Given that, the financial losses from this year due to COVID and other factors, what do you think your budget is for new offensive and defensive coordinators/staff? Just curious.

I highly doubt we fixed our financial situation in a year with no revenue

Supposedly we have a budget but absolutely no one knows what it is. So we know about as much as you in that regard.

Do u really think any university will be using endowments to cover athletic financial losses
Every school is going to be hurting from the pandemic

The budget was for buyouts, not for new hires according to The Advocate.
quote:
Orgeron was given a limited budget to buy out his staff, multiple sources said, and Pelini's buyout would have taken up most of it.
Also looks like they negotiated Pelini's buyout.
quote:
Instead, LSU and Pelini agreed to a financial settlement in which Pelini will accept a one-time payment instead of the full liquidated damages in his contract, the school said in a statement. The exact amount was not detailed.

They still have some boosters that will foot the bill. But those boosters want a say as well, so ... Woodward will keep them in line, unless he is ousted as well when things go down

Remember, the athletic budget has nothing to do with the academic side, other than some PR hit when the AD is spending like a drunken sailor while the academic side can't pay the light bill. I'm sure covid has taken a bite out of the LSU AD, but, if they really wanted to fire O, they could come up with the money. It's just hard to fire someone immediately after winning a national championship.

LSU football brings in around $100M/year. No SEC school is actually hurting for $. Any time you hear they are it stems from politicians in the state trying to get more funding. Just like how JBE created the whole LSU myth.

It will be interesting to see what it is and who you are able to get. Seems good/great coordinators are essential to Coach O getting a team that can win consistently. Up and comers perhaps?

The athletic department has different finances than the school.

That is just delusional A&M fans that built up this whole “LSU poor, we rich” narrative that never actually existed. Aggie is quite rich, LSU also falls in the top 10 list of Athletic revenue in the country. At one point a couple years ago we had the highest paid DC and OC in CFB.
Money is not the issue right now. What is being presented that people are confusing with a budget is that some poeple in the administration don’t want the next contract to be a long one that if we end up in another Bo Pelini situation we are paying multiple Buyouts.
Go get an Aranda on a 2 year deal, where you double their pay. If it works amazingly and he leaves, fine we restart the search again post Bo’s buyout. If he’s really good and doesn’t leave you then extend him, and lastly if he sucks you’re only only on the hook for one year.
I think last year proved we made a lot of bad decisions in haste coming off a championship high, and what we’re seeing now is going to be a more traditional hiring process similar to the ones that brought in guys like Aranda and Joe Brady.

The thing from a few years ago was on the academic side and was mostly rhetoric and political posturing to get more funding from the state budget.
LSU athletics is completely separate from the university and does not receive any university funds. While Covid is certainly an issue to the budget, that’s true for all schools. LSU athletics and TAF have plenty of money and have revenues/profits in line with its SEC Big6 peers.

This article is from last year, but I’m sure the numbers are still similar, sans the Covid year.

The state had cutting funding for the university, the athletic department wasn't in bad financial situation. In fact the athletic department gave the university a few million dollars to help out their cuts.

I think there is a serious flaw in the article. 73.5M rev for what i assume is football. A&M’s today (reported be USA Today) is north of 200 M. It’s probably not very accurate to assume 130 M of A&M’s revenue was unrelated to football. That same article had Lsu at very respectable 10th ~158M for 18-19.

If anyone in the SEC is broke, that's just piss poor management. The conference distribution alone is greater than most AD budgets.

Well in the spirit of the Christmas season, I will take your word that this isn't a troll post.
Obviously, LSU was down an estimated $80 million in Revenue this year due to COVID-19 (lost Ticket, concession, parking and merchandise sales). Concession revenues really popped last year as LSU allowed major Beer sales at the ball games (my wife would always grab 1 or 2, herself).
Now LSU's self imposed bowl ban is going to cost LSU to lose an estimated $8 million dollars. Given these buyouts, that lost bowl revenue could have covered this buyouts. Some LSU fans were wanting LSU to go ahead and un ban themselves and go play the bowl game and get the $ 8 million and see if these young team can keep getting better and get to 6-5.
I posted on TR and another LSU site No way. LSU finished the last 2 games with 50 scholarship players. These young men are gassed. No need to risk and injury, take the team culture that you finished with the last 2 games and build on that for next year.
So what is going to happen, well TAF supporters are going to have to come up with more donations and season ticket holders like myself are probably going to be asked to pay more for the seat License associated with season tickets. Just my theory.
