While Auburn and South Carolina were battling it out in the Georgia Dome, Harvey Updyke drove to Auburn to poison the Toomer's trees. He called into Finebaum several days later to admit his crime. The rest, as they say, is history.

Those trees had been dying from abuse for years. Thankfully since AU carried out their bizarre tradition of covering them in toilet paper and pressure washing it off after a football win, it only happened about 8 times a year on average.

I remember listening to that Finebaum episode live on my way home from work. I could not tell if it was a joke or not.

Was down a few years ago to visit colleagues. They've apparently tried to replace the soil and reestablish trees in Toomer's Corner, but cannot.

There were real questions if he would play or not before that game.

I remember some SC fans wanted him to play for no other reason that pride "We want to beat them at their best," type stuff. I just wanted a win.

I guess there was a reason for hope. We had lost a close one vs Cam & Co. @AU earlier in the year. The SECCG was a slaughter though.

The game was competitive until Auburn hit that Hail Mary at the end of the first half. Before that the score was 21-14. I think that TD knocked the wind out of South Carolina and they never recovered.

That Hail Mary had one Stephon Gilmore on the defense too.

That definitely broke our back though but only because I felt like we were barely keeping pace. Like yeah it was 21-14 but I remember getting a feeling in that stadium that we were outmatched and just trying to hang on for as long as we could. After that hail mary was hit we might as well not have even come out of the locker room in the 2nd half.
