He is a good defensive coordinator who was not a good choice as HC. There are quite a few schools that would be wise to hire him... as a DC.

I feel bad for Derek Mason and Will Muschamp.
They will never get over the hump again.
Vandy had some decent years (as in, 7 wins) under Franklin. South Carolina, Spurrier had them have a few 10+ win seasons. Impressive, to say the least, but these programs are not meant to do anything long-term. They have the odds stacked against them. If you coach at one of these places, expect it to be the last head coaching job you'll have in the Power 5. Career-killers.

Mason had a 7 win year at Vandy as well I believe. It’s just so difficult to maintain success there. I think Mason is a pretty good coach who chose the wrong job. He never had a chance this year with so many opt outs and COVID contact tracing seemed to hit Vandy hard every week.

Franklin came in at the right time though. He built the program around easy OOC wins and beating Houston Nutt and Joker Phillips. The next Vandy coach won’t have that luxury.

South Carolina is a sleeping giant. A good school, with new state of the art facilities, a good recruiting base, and big money donors and backers. Plus a loyal strong fan base. All it takes is the right guy. Look at schools that are strong now and in the conversation that weren’t always that way; such as our lovely orange clad friends from the upstate (and I’m not talking about the SCDC inmates either)
