So here's my question:
Did D'wan actually win the job or did he just get the reps because of daniels not being cleared?

If he won the job over Daniels that's a very bad sign.

Stetson Bennett is the clear winner. He can hit open WRS, knows where the first down markers are, and has a efficient grasp of the o.

There wasn’t an aspect of QB play where Mathis was better than Bennett - not even running ability

Based on what I saw today, my guess is that Daniels just wasn't cleared to play so Mathis was the default #1 for all the practice reps. I don't know how well he did in practice but he must not have completely sucked. He just didn't show-out today like some expected.

This is what i'm beginning to think.

As a fanbase we overthought this when the answer was in our face the whole time.
Kirby brought in not one, but TWO transfer QB's. If he liked what he saw from Mathis then he wouldn't have done that probably.
Sometimes a spade is a space. With that being said, he's still just a redshirt freshman with a lot of ability.
He was hurt by penalties and on several throws he looked good. That long pass to Pickens was nice.

Also I think we have to give him the benefit of the doubt the kid hadn't played football in damn near 2 years, I was actually kind of glad he got the s*** knocked out of him he needed that, but yeah he looked a little rattled at times and indecisive but that will come with game time experience in my opinion I'm not ready to give up on him just yet, he was a high four star player for a reason. I definitely think Bennett should start until JT is cleared, but I also think Mathis should continue to get in game reps.

FWIW, those transfers were brought in before Mathis was ever cleared to play football again. It would have been pretty irresponsible to not bring in additional QBs.

Also think about this, when we signed Beck, we went hard after CJ Stroud.
We signed Mathis mostly to spite Ohio St and the kid is clearly not ready for SEC Football. This is definitely a Tereshinski/Joe Cox year for us.
We're going to waste our defense this year cause we dont have a QB, this is Kirby's fault.

He’s HC but other than that couldn’t control what happened to Newman. That put us in a bind.

I'm sure Mathis looked good in practice. He looked shaken in his first real contact since high school and brain surgery. In hindsight it isnt exactly surprising.
Also, coaches called a better game in the second half - leaning more on White as he eventually found his stride.
I won't be surprised if he ends up starting by seasons end, but he'll see mop up duty until the game slows down.

I expected Mathis to make mistakes in the air.
1) game speed is always different
2) all of the spring and fall compliments... no one said pinpoint. It is his athleticism and arm strength.
The key is for him to grow and get in the flow of the game.
I didnt expect the struggles running the ball by Mathis. He forgot to go nprth/south. He wants to win the sideline on every scramble (with defenders already camped on the sideline). He didnt feel the pocket very well.
He can absolutely be coached up. But we have a grind on the schedule. He will get hit. Will he he ready to get up and make the right reads and decisions after the hit.

It's Kriby's fault Fields left, Fromm went to the NFL, JT hasn't been cleared, and Newman opted out at the last second? Take that shite to the rant where it belongs

Right, so Kirby and Monken spend what, 7 or 8 months getting the offense ready for Newman, and he leaves, so that's Kirby's fault?
We litterally had 4 weeks to get the offense ready for another QB and that's Kirby's fault? Get the bullshite out my face.

Just rewatched and believe it or not Mathis showed signs on the first drive and after about 9 minutes in. He went from deer in headlights to off by an inch here and there. Still didn't use his legs as much a he should have, but I really think the coaches believe in him and will give him every opportunity to succeed.
Call me crazy, but if it's not Daniels I think Mathis ends the season as the starter.

Agreed, and while I'm glad to see his coming back into the game once it was in hand, I was a little dismayed to see he had zero grasp of the first down markers when he scrambled.

Lol. Just watch this drive and this drive. Also, check out the last drive of the game.
He was greatly improved over his start, showed some elusiveness, and he dealt with pressure. It really may not take much for him to be more effective than Stetson.
