I hope this DC hire works out for Leach.

He is a rising star on defense and will have talent to work with. Several things about Leach stood out to me after looking up everything about his time as head coaching jobs. In 18 years, 10 of those years he led the nation in passing. However, his defenses gave up a lot of points most years.

Secondly, it seemed to take several years for that offense to take off. I can understand part of that because damn, his recruiting was bad and I do mean BAD!

To have an 11 win season at say Washington State with nothing but 3 or 2 star recruits is amazing. He said himself that what lured him to MSU was the talent in Mississippi and the south in general. Right now he is already having the best recruiting class than he ever had at Washington State.

I do think it could take several years on offense but if this DC turns out to be as good as advertised,(Which I did homework on) we just might have a solid team in a couple years.

He will have a young but very very talented OL to work with, especially at the tackle position. I just hope with that passing attack he knows it opens up the running game for a couple of Stud RB’s we have.

Arnett, who was selected as a member of the prestigious AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute in 2020, led a 2019 San Diego State defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in seven categories. The Aztecs finished second in rushing defense (75.4 yards per game), third in scoring defense (12.7 points per game), fourth in interceptions (18), fourth in first downs allowed (198), sixth in total defense (287.8), sixth in passing efficiency defense (110.25) and eighth in takeaways (27).

Sorry man, but it's not gonna work. Called it back in January. Leach's system won't work here and he will not recruit well (hard) enough. He is known for being comparatively lazy as far as head coaches go. He has his own life and interests and will not sacrifice those for 20 hour days of coaching.

I also seriously doubt that a transfer (from Stanford no less) is going to effectively run his air raid.

Sounds like the DC has a decent resume, I’ve never heard that name though. Leach is actually doing extremely well recruiting and he’s the king of getting transfers and turning them into national leasing passers.

Only thing I would be worried about if I were state would be Leach saying something funny and then BLM makes his arse quit. Y’all came after him for that meme.

Leach is essentially always going to have, at best, mediocre defenses. It’s the trade off for running his offense as he does. His style stresses his defenses by putting them on the field A LOT and often with short periods of rest in between. Since he took over at Texas Tech in 2000 his defenses have been in the top 10 in snaps played all but 4 times, and in the top 25 every season he’s been a HC.

Now, he can have success with mediocre defense no doubt. If he’s scoring 45 a game it doesn’t really matter if you score 30. But I wouldn’t sign up for that job as a DC looking to advance my career.

I’ve never heard the name, but I was aware of the very good defense of San Diego state. If the coach has connections to the MS high schools y’all could have some good defense. Just be prepared to give up a lot of points and yards per game.

I think a better stat to judge your defense on would be yards per play and yards per drive. Your defense will be in the field longer. That’s just how Leach’s teams operate.

You would if you were 30 and at SDSU. If he had mediocre defense stat wise at MSU, he will be poached with a quickness because other HC’s and AD’s will realize how damn good that performance was while having air raid on the other side of the ball.

I’ll also add that Arnett runs a 3-3-5 base with 5 true DBs. It’s the variant popularized in CUSA the Big East in the early to mid-2000s, most notably at WVU. This defensive scheme as a base has traditionally struggled in power 5 conferences, with the notable exception of TCU under Gary Patterson. It allows second level defenders to get washed out by bigger and more talented offensive lines and tight ends.

As Mullen alluded, I think Leach may tweak his offense at State to take full advantage of the RB talent we have. He is a very smart coach and while he will always be wide open, he is going to utilize the strengths of this team. With this team, the ability to run the ball is there.
That in turn will benefit the defense.
Just my opinion though.

I think running a 3-3-5 defense isn’t as big as a scheme mismatch any longer. With all schools making pushes to have more receiving threats on the field, if you have 3 monsters it can be a terrifying defense

People who think Leach will run the exact same WSU team at MSU are in for disappointment.

The dude has been looking to move to the SEC for a few years. He knows what he’s getting into.

The air raid is an extremely simple system. There’s a lot of room to spice it up and supplement it with plays to better match the caliber of opponents in the league.

The bigger concern isn’t his system translating well to the big leagues, it’s his system being affective against a dynamic set of schemes and systems. LSU and Auburn will be two completely different matchups, for example.

All I know is that Arnett doesn't sugar coat anything. He said that he doesn't have a player on the team that can execute the defense right now.

and that is no surprise. It is completely new and they have been set behind by the virus.

This scheme will be a struggle for these players this year. We have the talent but the execution is going to be ugly this year (depending on how much we get to play this year). Next year we will see a vast improvement IMO.

It will be vs Bama. The Bama o line will gobble in the ground game.

I mean, it seemed to advance Alex Grinch's career, what with being co-DC at Ohio State and DC at Oklahoma, two very very big football schools, after he spent 3 years as DC at Wazzu under Leach.
