A lot to unpack here.
It started off with a piece from the Wash Post in which someone leaked a portion of the meeting the ADs had and concern players had.
Wolken response:
Wolken calling out Bjork

Wolken response saying muh protests are different (actually showing hypocrisy)

quote:
The Post obtained an audio recording of a video conference between worried college football players and SEC medical officials “It’s not good enough.”
Wolken response:
quote:
I don’t think anything on the call was particularly outrageous but it highlights two key issues: 1. These people have no answers and they’re just hoping it’s not going to be a big mess 2. The players have no say in any of this. They should unionize and force negotiations.
Wolken calling out Bjork
quote:
Ross Bjork publicly pushing for 50% attendance but reducing student tickets yesterday given the COVID data in Texas was obscene. Just completely tone deaf
Bjork response
quote:
Actually Dan, Texas Governor Abbott has an executive order that says sporting events are allowed to host up to 50% of normal operating capacity. We’re following current state policies, implementing numerous safety protocols, requiring masks, & health experts have guided our plans
Wolken response
quote:
Ross, the country is having a hard enough time pulling off sports right now *without* fans to think 50,000 people at your place is a good idea much less doable at this point. And on the same day your state recorded its highest weekly death total just didn’t come off right
Random twitter reply
quote:
Dan, by this logic I hope you are also calling for the government to put a stop to all protests, no matter how virtuous their motives might be. I haven’t heard you advocate for that, did I miss something?? A little consistency would be nice!
Wolken response saying muh protests are different (actually showing hypocrisy)
quote:
Protests are people gathering for the cause of social justice. College football games are people gathering for entertainment and enrichment of coaches and administrators. Ask me a harder question next time.

I’d never wish harm to any of my fellow posters here, not even the autistic ones. Dan Wolken can die in a fire though

Wolken sucks. If sports gets canceled this year, hope he is the first out of a job.

Imagine being this smug about college football, but simultaneous covering it for your livelihood while thinking you are better than everyone involved

I hope more of our leaders get some balls and start pushing back on some things. It's obvious there is no end to the demands and bullshite until someone finally says it's enough.

Doesn’t get more spoiled than having certain people make millions off the labor and skills of workers who are being paid in peanuts. This is the very foundation of capitalism. If you have a skill for which there is a high demand for and few people with it, you kind of get to set the rules for what you are willing to take for your services.
I guarantee you that if colleges don’t make these players happy, they can and will find someone who will and college football will be 2nd and 3rd tier players trying their best to play the sport.
That’s where we are. College is not a requirement for a pro career in the NFL. It’s been used that way because the players allowed it to be used that way, but if they unionize and refuse to play without pay, I can promise you the NFL will adapt new policies to get those star players. They certainly are not going to start drafting lower tier players just because they “played in college”.

Wolken seems like the kind of guy who will cry about the need for player unions in college sports, and then when it leads to college sports either operating like pro sports or dying off he'll cry about how we need college sports to come back or return to being amateur. He'll also cry about having lost his job if college sports die off.

I don’t believe those who died, nor their families, care which large gatherings the people that have covid to their loved ones attended.

quote:not that this is relevant. it's not about the purpose of the gathering. it's about choice. if people choose to congregate to watch fb, that's their choice and it has been proven in several court cases that it's unlawful to prevent that choice. you may not like it. you may not understand it. you may think it's too "risky" for society but you don't get to curtail people's freedom in this country - not yet.
Protests are people gathering for the cause of social justice. College football games are people gathering for entertainment and enrichment of coaches and administrators
also, at the idea these "protests" are an acceptable exception to social distancing

the whole premise of shutting down society is stupid anyway. even if the hospitals were starting to be overwhelmed, which they NEVER were, society would adapt, quickly. field hospitals were erected in hours that went completely unused. we're fast tracking treatments like never before. when the need is there, we find a way. society has never shut down like this for a virus. hey guess what - SWEDEN STILL EXISTS.
the virus is not going anywhere whether we shut down or not. us shutting down is only serving to hurt the economy and our lives. it's not serving any medical/scientific purpose.

I agree, but I also agree with private organizations being able to set their own rules. You join the organization, you abide by the rules. Don't like it? Then leave.
Players join the NCAA knowing full well what the deal is. For 99 percent of the athletes in NCAA sports, their "compensation" is significantly more than their market value. They are getting more than they likely deserve.
For a very small amount of athletes, perhaps they could do better elsewhere and maybe they should try.
There is a reason, though, why the XFL and other similar leagues have failed -- no one likes minor league sports.
Colleges have a built in fan base, so NCAA players often have an inflated sense of their value.
