What championship hosting do we do for the SEC? Nothing in a major sport. Maybe minor sport (golf, tennis), but who cares.

Baseball regionals
NCAA not SEC awarded. Now the NCAA could come back and say the same thing, in fact they have at a certain level.
Baseball and softball were exempted, because they were earned regionals and not pre-determined

Gotcha. Yea then Mississippi offers nothing to take away unless it’s the lower tier sports.

Don’t give in. If the mob wants to talk then we can talk once they stop throwing tantrums.

quote:frick that. In no way is this “good”, regardless on what your belief on the flag is. This is nothing more than pandering bullshite. In no way should a fricking college sports association be able to tell a state what they can or can not have on their flag. frick the NCAA, frick Greg sankey. Let the people of Mississippi vote themselves to change the flag. When outside voices and opinions influence what happens in the 662, 601, or 228 then as a state we’ll never get better.
Good
And if you don’t believe me that both sankey and the ncaa are just pandering to the mob here, look at Georgia. It’s the ACTUAL flag of the CSA except it has a seal inside the stars. Mississippi on the other hand only has the unofficial battle flag inside our flag. But no one in any position of power has gone after Georgia (yet), because they’d be losing the ATL metro for championship events. Everyone just wants to continue piling on “racist, backwards Mississippi” for some reason.

I couldn't care less what the flag looks like tbh. I don't fly it on my house, boat, or place of business. If it's offensive to a bunch of people, then I'm in favor of changing it. Let's move on to something else.

I support changing the flag. My concern is that if they give in on this, it won't stop. Next it will be "The University of Mississippi must abandon the name Ole Miss and their mascot Rebels because of their connotations. Until this happens, the university is not eligible for post season play in all sports".
Losing "Rebels" wouldn't be incredibly detrimental. However if they get rid of the name Ole Miss, that changes everything. Hell, we wouldn't be able to chant 'Hotty Toddy" anymore. That would effectively kill any identity the university has.

They aren’t saying they can or can’t have it. They are just saying we aren’t going to allow XYZ for your member institutions if you do have it.
It is pandering. But I support a business’ right to do what they feel like will make them the most money in the long run.

I’ve been an Ole Miss fan my whole life and some of my earliest memories are playing with friends between the bleachers at football games. While a part of me will be hurt if and when we change the name, I think we have to consider which side of history we choose to be on with this. There are racial/slavery connotations with some our symbols. Most fans of the university don’t see them in that way, but it’s easy to see how minorities can and will interpret them in that way. In today’s landscape, black athletes are watching what we do. Do we want to cling to “heritage” or be proactive and get ahead of this? In my opinion, if we want our athletic dept to be relevant and be a respected university then we need to strongly consider changing the name in light of the oncoming criticism. I miss hearing From Dixie with Love, seeing colonel Reb and waving a flag at games, but this isn’t about fans’ nostalgia. Just my opinion

The mob isn’t going to start spending money here though just because we could change the flag. The SEC is effectively crapping where they sleep by alienating a large portion of their fan base.

quote:well we’ve already seen businesses pull out or refuse to come here over the flag and similar issues. You can see from the SEC and NCAA perspective how they might fear pushback from sponsors. Especially with such a magnifying glass on the issues right now. They would be acting foolishly not to come out strong against it.

I'm getting real tired of this cancel culture.

It's hard to admit it but you're right. The university has busted it's arse for decades to repair it's image after what happened in the 60's. It seems like the end game is inevitably going to be getting rid of the name.
The older I've gotten, the more I've started to realize that I can't decide what's offensive to someone and what isn't. I have absolutely no say in what a minority considers offensive or not. If the name Ole Miss Rebels brings up negative memories or feelings about injustices that were committed, then there does need to be a discussion.

I used to be against it...
and not to thread hijack.. but I'm starting to view the flag like gay marriage... what I mean is, sure I may have different feelings on it... but it really doesn't have any effect on me at all whatever is on the flag so i'm ok with changing it to appease the potential oppressed ...
Just go on and do it and move on to something else. Curious to see what that will be...

I’m 100% for changing the flag, but the fact that they aren’t putting the same pressure on GA for their flag is bullshite and shows they are all about the money only. They are too scared to mess up the football game in ATL to cross that bridge. That would require consistency
