long overdue.

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System announced Monday a couple of things they will be doing in the coming weeks regarding the names of campus buildings and plaques honoring Confederate soldiers.

The Board, in consultation with UA President Dr. Stuart Bell, announced the removal of three plaques commemorating students who served in the Confederate Army and members of the student cadet corps involved in defending the university campus.

The plaques are located on and in front of Gorgas Library. The plaques will be saved and, according to the board, placed at a more appropriate historical setting at some point in the future.

In addition, the Board of Trustees has appointed a group of trustees to review and study the names of buildings on all UA System campuses and report to the board if they recommend any changes to the names of those buildings.

The final decision about those recommendations will be made at a public meeting in the future.

There's no defending this action.

As a black guy this is stupid and pointless just to appease the masses now.. nobody today has enslaved me.. nor has any of us been enslaved. History is what it is.. we learn from it. We don’t want to swing so fast from one side to the other.. that is not what equality is. Trust me when I say if equality is forced and shoved down everyone’s throats racism will get stronger behind closed doors. We need a conversation.. both sides. There is serious issues in the justice system.. but there is also in our neighborhoods. We need to address it all.. when you have gang bangers leading the marches we have lost the point. Taken down a statue won’t change that.. might make you feel good, but pushes us further away from a real conversation and solutions.

Good. The Confederate shite belongs in museums, not as banners for the ignorant to glorify. There were a lot of good men who died on both sides, and they can be honored by their families for who they were, not for their acts in supporting the wrong side.

I'm as southern a white man as there is. I can be proud of my heritage without glorifying that terrible war. It's time for all the people who want to pretend they're some kind of rebel hero to grow up and show some love and respect to their actual neighbors instead of the memory of some mythical cause.

So, my son sent me this. How many of you really believe that the SGA has the power to get the university to make these drastic changes?
It also says the building to rename are the Gorgas library and house, and Morgan Hall.
Amelia Gorgas was married to a soldier for heavens sake.

As John Cleese said:
"I'm very confused about toppling statues...

The Greeks, whose civilisation has long been admired in the West, believed that in the Ancient World, a cultured society was only possible if it was based on slavery

So should we be getting rid of statues of Socrates and Aristotle?"

You can't apply social standards from 150 years ago to today's world.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Erasing history doesn't change it.
Learning from it does.
