Saban would’ve owned him. He would’ve been an 8-10 win coach.

Unless he upgraded his staff and began recruiting a lot harder then he will continue to struggle against Saban.

2010 was his best shot at Saban, and he didn't get it done. However, even if his overall success declined, he would've owned Elmer Fudd even worse than Bert did, so I'm definitely relieved he rode off into the sunset

This is my honest opinion. Petrino was a great coach, good talent evaluator, but a poor recruiter. I thought Arkansas was underranked/undervalued for the 2009-2010 seasons, while 2011 was about right.
After the 2011 season, we were going to struggle to replace lost players and I expected to drop in the rankings. Instead, the early preseason polls had us in the top-10, which I thought was ridiculous.
Petrino had been lucky with his early Arkansas classes, but despite the success, things were about to normalize. In 2012, Petrino would have won more than Smiley, but it still would have been a disappointing year. Arkansas would have continued having success, but not at the same level as 2010-2011, because Petrino would struggle to get the talent.
Petrino never had top-15 talent, but he had enough to be very successful. Even so, the 2010 Arkansas team still had more 4-5* players on the roster than the Oregon team that played Auburn for the national championship that year.

Also who would have gone to Atlanta from the west if they had beaten us? Arkansas beats LSU beats Alabama beats Arkansas. No other losses.
The bigger question was who would play for the national championship? Everyone was saying that it would be LSU and Alabama, regardless, but that would have been criminal, imo. I knew we were going to lose @LSU, but I wanted to win so bad, just to see what would really happen.

I think there's a good chance y'all would've won without Mathieu's punt return TD

Maybe. I went in to that game expecting us to get slaughtered, because Alabama and LSU were on a higher plane than everyone else. The first half went much better than I expected, though.

In 2011 defense and special teams scored a lot and gave us a lot of short fields. It was the same 1970s offense. Without Mathieu, we'd probably have gone 9-3 or something. Petrino vs Miles was a huge coaching mismatch, clown hat could've easily lost three straight to midlife crisis Bobby from 2008-10 despite having much more talent. Brain-Les was Bert's bitch (only win coming on a hail mary at home in 2013), I shudder to think what Petrino would've done to him
Posted on 5/9/20 at 6:09 pm to Mithridates6
Yea, but that defense was incredible. Especially Mathieu and the secondary. How many points did they score?
FWIW, I don't recall ever fearing an LSU offense until last season.

I said it then and I'll say it now. Firing Petrino (subsequently proven by hiring Chad Morris) was proof the PTB at Arkansas have no real intentions of competing in football in the SEC.

They should have dropped Arkansas out of the top 10 preseason rankings after Petrino was fired. If he wasn't fired, he wouldn't met those expectations after the player departures we had off that 2011 team. They were at best a 8-4 or 9-3 team.
The 2013 team, Petrino would do better than Bert but still not as good as the year before. He was looking at a 7-5 team at best, still much better than 3-9 with Bert.
The 2014 year he was looking at climbing up. Bert underachieved with that team and I see them at 9-3 at best. Bert cost us 3-4 wins a year here.
The 2015 year, Petrino was looking at winning the SEC. Bert had all the talent in place but Bert farted it away. Petrino would have won 11-13 games with that team.
The 2016. Petrino wouldn't have lost against Missouri or Virginia Tech. He was looking at 9-4 or 10-3 year.
The 2017 year would be a rebuilding year but I think he would still go bowling.
This is alternative history if Petrino didn't implode and started taking recruiting more seriously.

I'm not sure, Mathieu had a huge punt return TD against UGA as well when we were trailing 10-0. Clairborne had I think a kickoff return TD against WV. I will say that the 2011 offense did have something of a downfield passing game with Rueben Randle that other Miles teams didn't have.
Overall, I don't think anyone feared our offense until last season lol. We scored 14 combined points against yall in Less' 9th and 10th seasons here and some people still remember that buffoon fondly.

After the 2011 season, I had this weird feeling that Petrino had peaked here and would never, again, have the players to compete for the SEC. I never expected the motorcycle accident, though.
Had a similar feeling about Bert after 2015, except that I knew it was more than a feeling with Pittman gone.
Who knows what would have happened with Petrino? I certainly didn't want him gone, regardless.

Most if not all SEC would have swept it under the rug or kept it quiet. But here we expect to play by the rules when other programs don't because the NCAA is a wet noodle.
The administration has never grasped the concept how serious football is in the SEC. Until they do, Arkansas will always be last and suck arse.
I dropped my tickets in 2016 after the Virginia Tech loss because I was tired of giving my money to people who don't give a shite. I don't expect much but don't run my team out on the field and lose to a shitty North Texas that are paid to lose.
It is sad because this use to a big time football school with high expectations. Now we expect to barely beat Nevada, horseshite, we need to beat those turds by six touchdowns. But until they take it serious again I won't either.

With the score 24-17 in the 3rd these are the lsu drives
7 runs 1 incomplete pass. TD
2 plays both rushes. TD
Score now 38-17 when lsu gets the ball back with 10 mins left
2 rushes 2 passes. Then 2 incompletions from the 24 and one completion. Only pussies cry about another team running up the score. especially when lsu wasnt throwing deep like you claim.

Petrino makes Saban look like Gandhi! I am so glad that piece of shite is out of the SEC. I get the whole I love my coach even though hes an a-hole but Jesus that guy should be taken out back and shot!

With the benefit of hindsight, Petrino was just too big of an a-hole to have sustained success, anywhere.
The stories I've heard over the years from people boil down to this:
1. He's a dick to his players. At first, that yields results. As a few years go by, those who are still in the system start talking openly to recruits about what an a-hole he is, and it hurts recruiting, as has been shown everywhere he's ever been.
2. He's an a-hole to assistants, staff, all the way down to maintenance people at the facilities he works in. Nobody likes him, so he can't sustain any type of decent staff. His assistants took a top 10 Arkansas team and lost to La Monroe.

Not only did he not take recruiting seriously, his demeanor sabotaged him with potential recruits. Players talked openly to recruits about what an insane prick was to everybody. Source: Firsthand from a player (successful, known statewide by fans at that point) who was on the team for Petrino's first two seasons at Arkansas.
