Can Nate Oats recruit well enough to be elite?

He’s a great coach. Can he sign the players he needs to truly turn this into an elite program? How good of a recruiter was he at Buffalo in relative terms?

Hodgson was known as one of the best JUCO recruiters in the country.

One of his old assistants said that if he could recruit to Buffalo with their crappy facilities, he'd be a huge success recruiting at Alabama. I won't be surprised to see some "Frank McGuire style" talent coming to Alabama from the New York/New Jersey area in the next few years.

Nate Oats is a fantastic coach and is going to do great things at Bama. Really like him. Hate that he has to share the same state as Pearl.

We'll see how he finishes with this class. We badly need Charles Bediako. That Wisconsin transfer would be nice as well.

As long as Pettway is on staff, our recruiting should be fine.

Well Avery and Grant have proven that you ain't going to get far by sticking with talent from Alabama. You might get some athletes that play basketball but you need more if you intend to get out of the NIT booth.

Bediako would be an awesome pickup.

Absolutely not. He quit on his team mid-season.

Need the kid out of Lowndes County

Yeah true. Was just thinking because he said it wasn't a good fit that maybe he'd like the environment at Bama more with Oats. Players seem to love him.
But that is a concern.

The kids in the transfer portal are coming with some type of warts and blemishes. It's not always going to be about playing time. Kobe King is a long way from Tuscaloosa at this point but Oats is going to have to be extra creative about getting his roster flipped and headed in the direction he wants it.
Gene Bartow at UAB, once upon a time, brought in a lot of transfers and had his program in the NCAA tourney quickly. Just have to be creative with a healthy balance of homegrowns.

I see Nate Oats being Alabama's Billy Donovan

Nate needs to really up the game in recruiting for next years team. It must be hard as hell to get good BB players to come to Bama (not athletes that play BB).

Donovan had the same problem at UF. Get the best basketball talent to a football dominant school.

It really is.
A. It’s a football school in a football state
B. Coleman Coliseum is a depressing, cavernous dump
C. We have a well earned reputation for mediocrity and lack of player development

What makes you say that?

Nate was about to put a really good basketball team together this season. We might even be a top 25 team if the NCAA hadn't blocked a key transfer, and we suffer some key injuries.
I think he's gonna do a great job recruiting. Hopefully he can get some transfers in as well

He will recruit well..and also DEVELOP the players he signs. We haven't really had that since they fired Wimp

I honestly think we need (as most schools, too) more of the career players, rather than the one and dones.
Good coaches can develop players, but it doesn't just happen in one season.
In a different rant, I wish college basketball would change to the college baseball format, where you have to stay at least 3 seasons if you go to college.
