Portal Hurting or Helping CFB?

I initially thought the portal would help bring parity to cfb. Traditionally, high tier teams like Bama would hoard 4/5* athletes on the bench who would have started on 100 other teams. I thought the portal would allow alot of those guys to spread out across the landscape.
But so far, it's been the other way around. The upper tier schools are using it to pluck what few diamonds in the rough from the lesser schools.
Instead of Wake Forest getting some badass linebackers and db's riding the bench from the SEC, the SEC goes and takes their one good player in Jamie La'Jai Newman.
And alot of high quality bench riders that are leaving the SEC are going to other top tier schools. No parity is growing.
What do yall think?

It's good for college football. Why would it not be? They have always had transfers man, so the only difference is the portal being there so programs can know who is available for transfer.

Jamie Newman is not a diamond in the rough. He sucks. Completion percentage was below 60% in all but 3 games. And below 50% in 4 of last 5. Dude is another Jalen Hurts. He sucks

So, you think that the transfer portal is the reason why Wake Forest can't compete with the top tier programs in football? Come on now man, Wake Forest wouldn't be relevant with or without Newman and the portal being there. This is the exact reason why I believe they need to create another division of fcs football. The programs that honestly have no chance at ever playing for a title in fbs can have their own division, with other programs like them and compete in a more evenly matched league than they're in right now. That's the only way to fix this. They need to split the fbs into 2 divisions and match the elite teams with other elite programs and the ones like Wake Forest etc need to be competing against other programs like themselves.

You have no reading comprehension.

Grad transfer rule > Do anything you want portal

Instead of schools like Wake losing their star player, how about using the portal to add a few pieces to make them more competitive? That's not happening. That's what I thought the portal would bring to the cfb landscape.

It’s terrible and why the same teams will always compete for playoff spots.

Issue is players who sign with Bama/LSU/tOSU/Clemson/OU/UGA and get buried on the depth chart are leaving for whichever of those schools listed above have depth issues, if they’re good enough. Which most of them are. If they don’t go to one of those they go to UF, aTm, Michigan or FSU. Basically the major programs are just swapping players. Then, on top of that, the big schools are poaching the more talented players from the also-rans.
This has always been one of the major negative points about the portal. Essentially it’s just a way for the rich to get richer.

I'm not sure how you could have thought it would work out any way other than like it has done.
Think it's bad now, wait until they get to profit from their likenesses. You think the better profit is at Wake Forest or UGA?

The portal essentially prepares CFB players for the NFL. It's basically Free Agency, when the first stop in your career doesn't work out the way it was planned

It works both ways. LSU has lost a several players in the portal. Kelvin joseph went to Kentucky for instance. Now, whether Joseph ends up being the "missing piece" to uk being able to compete with the big-time programs in the sec is highly doubtful. Why? Bc Kentucky has far less talent overall compared to programs like LSU, bama, etc...however, it is good for the athletes to get a fresh start at a new program to possibly make something or their career, where they probably wouldn't get the opportunity to start at the program they transfered from. In short, the portal was created to help the student athletes make the most of their college careers and find the best fit for them to maximize their potential. If a player believes it's in their best interest to leave a lesser program like Wake Forest to go to a better one like uga, then that's a good thing in my opinion. It works both ways though. There are players that enter the portal all the time that leave a big-time program where they aren't playing much to go to another where they will get a better chance to play. This has all happened way before the portal was created though is my point. The portal was just a way to make it more efficient and more organized...that's all it is for.

No doubt it's perceived as better for the players but not for the teams losing star players and the associated fans. Georgia was definitely better off losing the #1 QB recruit and Wake Forest will likely be worse without Newman.

They are really going to build this guy up. Worse yet, he's only going to give them one year at most.

Probably an unpopular take, but the only way to create parity is to cut scholarships. Going from 85 to 70 would move a lot of talent around.

That's exactly what Saban said would happen.
People should listen to him more. He's a pretty smart guy

I think it actually helps recruits when coaches want to bullshite them, though. Fake promises and all of that. "You can compete for the job, I swear!!"
It doesn't punish them for believing in bullshite artist coaches.

I don't understand how the portal is any different from traditional transfer rules. Kids have always been able to transfer, the portal just makes it easier to find a new place to go.
I think it's the same as always just less hassle for the student.
